Motocross of Nations: Italy aims for the podium

MANTUA The Italy of the clawed wheels promises spectacle and a podium position for the Motocross of Nations 2021, starting today on the Migliaretto track with Antonio Cairoli, victorious in MXGP, and Mattia Guadagnini in great shape. But the Netherlands of the trio Herlings, Coldenhoff and Van De Moosdijk, perhaps the best assorted team, and best placed at the end of Saturday’s practice, frightens everyone.
In MXGP the British Watson on Yamaha is the best at the start followed by the French Paturel on Honda, Migliaretto specialist, the Dutch Coldenhoff (Yamaha), and an excellent Antonio Cairoli who, taking away unnecessary risks, places fourth with the goal to reach the summit during the race. Fifth was the German Max Nagl, who was back on the track where he was the winner of the 2007 Starcross. Watson sets excellent times and Paturel and Coldenhoff, in less than 2 laps, are sucked into Cairoli. 10 minutes + 3 laps from the end Tony unleashes the class of the best days scoring a time of 1’54 “522 against Watson’s 1’57” 780: the driver from Messina arrives like a fury behind the Englishman who begins to look more at your exhausts than at the track in front of you. At the end, Cairoli took the measures and took the lead by blowing up the audience of the Migliaretto. Given more color than sport: at the end of the race, Cairoli’s victory was also applauded by his rivals. Lots of stuff.
MX2 – Cannon start for the Frenchman of the Ktm Tom Vialle with the Austrian Hofer and the British Mewse both on Ktm to follow along with McLellan (Husqvarna), Gifting (GasGas) and Piccolo (Ktm). Mattia Guadagnini lagged behind on Ktm, only 13th. Vialle has a Martian step and his opponents see him moving away into the sun. Only Guadagnini stands out for a bad comeback that takes him up to fourth place. At the checkered flag first Vialle, fresh as a rose.
Open – One emotion after another characterizes the race with a fight for the top fought to the end. To shoot better is Boisrame on Kawasaki followed by a wetsuit composed of Boegh Damm (Ktm), Jacobi (Honda) and Jasikonis (Husqvarna). Only sixth, highly anticipated, Herlings on Ktm. The Dutchman devours one opponent after another demonstrating his great class by conquering the summit after a splendid fight with Jacobi. Only eighth was Alessandro Lupino on Ktm: last at the start perhaps due to a technical problem, he managed to recover in the final.
«We are obviously aiming for the podium for today’s race – Cairoli declared at the press conference – But it will be tough, there are many drivers and strong teams who want to win. We will have to not take unnecessary risks and reach the positions that matter. I’m not at 100%, obviously, given the crash last Sunday, but the team and I will fight ».
