Milan remembers the victims of the Acqui Division massacre in Kefalonia with a monument that was inaugurated in the Gardens of Piazza Ermete Novelli and which was donated to the city by the European Foundation Cefalonia-Corfu 1941/1944.
The monument was inaugurated by the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, who recalled how “memory is a value that Milan cultivates and defends with obstinacy. Our city does not forget those who sacrificed themselves for the community, who fell by doing the their duty, those who have contributed to uphold the honor of the country “.
The one carried out by the Nazis in Kefalonia, Sala recalled, “was one of the most vile and cruel massacres of those terrible years. Today we do not want and cannot forget the sacrifice of those people. – Sala concluded – Remember their heroism and loyalty to the homeland also means remembering the sufferings and tragedies that arise when intolerance, racism, totalitarianism prevail “.
