Milano – Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 October 2021, at 15.30 and 17.30, the 2021/2022 season of the Manzoni Theater in Milan continues with the first children’s show of the new bill: in first national team goes on stage Il Gruffalò: fairy tale in music for young and old, directed by Manuel Renga, freely taken from the book The Gruffalo at Julia Donaldson e Alex Scheffler and performed by Giuseppe Brancato, Stefano Colli, Gaia Carmagnani e Elisa Lombardi.
Milano – Inspired by a well-known traditional Chinese fairytale, The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson was first published in Italy in 1999 with the original illustrations by Alex Scheffler and quickly became a editorial case of children’s literature with millions of copies sold worldwide and translations in over fifty languages. Ten years later it was made into an animated film and it also saw several theatrical adaptations: the productions of the English company Tall Stories and the Dutch Meneer Monster are famous. To bring it on stage in Italy, in a completely original version, is the Aida Foundation with the Cultural Services Center of Santa Chiara, the Stable Theater of Veneto and the Bernstein School of Musical from Bologna.
Milano – A fairy tale for adults and children that speaks of one of the strongest emotions: the fear. Because self-knowledge also passes through the knowledge of our fears. The story is that of a cunning hungry mouse who to protect himself from the dangers of the forest and from predators who would like to eat it, invents the presence of a strange animal with eyes oranges, soft tongue and purplish thorns on the fur, a type of cross between a bear and a buffalo. He will find with great surprise that the terrible creature, which he only imagined, really exists, but do not worry: it will be the Gruffalo who will become the best ally of his safety. On stage the initiation rites of our little mouse who, after having faced and overcome all the tests – especially his fears – will emerge stronger and more aware than before.
The staging, which provides the audience involvement, tells the story in the form of musical, leaving intact the rhymes of the English writer and making the actors wear costumes inspired by the illustrations of the German designer Scheffler. The direction is entrusted to Manuel Renga, artistic co-director of the Free Theater of Milan with Corrado Accordino and founder of the Chronos3 company. Renga himself also oversaw the dramaturgical adaptation with Pino Costalunga, expert author of children’s literature. The music, all original, was composed by Patrizio Maria D’Artista and the puppets from Mariangela Gabrieli of the Veneto company Mondo alla Rovescia.
