ANCONA – “It is essential to defend local agricultural production, focusing on the quality of short supply chains between producer and consumer”.
This is what the Regions asked the European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski and the Minister of Agricultural Food Forestry Policies Stefano Patuanelli, in Florence, during the work of the Agricultural Policy Commission of the Conference of Regions. The meeting took place in the Tuscan capital, where the Open Forum on sustainable agriculture was subsequently held – as part of the Italian presidency – with the participation of the G20 agriculture ministers.
“The Regions have asked for guarantees on the forthcoming programming of European funds and on the role that must be recognized to them in this area”, reports Vice-President Mirco Carloni, Councilor for Agriculture. A particularly debated topic was that of the defense of local geographical indications. “The recognition and enhancement of quality must be brought to the center of agricultural production and European policies, without shortcuts and false illusions for consumers. I personally posed the question of the defense of Mozzarella TSG (traditional specialty guaranteed), other colleagues that of Prosek which improperly recalls the Italian Prosecco. How great is the concern for the traffic light label for food, which marks agricultural products as at risk, perhaps excellent products from the Marche region, and promotes others with industrial production “. Carloni reports that, on the part of the Commissioner, there has been availability on the issues raised which, the vice president points out, “will in any case be the subject of the next programming and further brought to the discussion of the Conference of Regions”.
