“Wheels of a cooperative gear”. These are the nine sentences of sentences between 2 years and 3 months and one year and 4 months requested by the Turin prosecutor, Vincenzo Pacileo at the trial, resumed in the Assize Court, for the facts of piazza San Carlo of 3 June 2017, when, during the projection of the finale Champions Juventus-Real, waves of panic in the crowd resulted in over 1,500 injuries and, subsequently, the deaths of 2 women. Among the accused of disaster and manslaughter there are officials of the Municipality and of the Police Headquarters, in addition to the deputy prefect Roberto Dosio, for whom the request is one year and 10 months. According to the prosecutor, there were gaps in the organization and management of the event. The panic was triggered by some young people who wanted to take advantage of the case to carry out some robberies. The 10-year sentence was upheld on appeal for four defendants.
The prosecutor proposed 2 years and 3 months for Michele Mollo (manager of the Police Headquarters), then a year and ten months for Paolo Lubbia (manager of the Municipality), Marco Sgarbi (municipal police officer), Alberto Bonzano (Head of the Police Headquarters), Dario Longhin (fire brigade officer), Franco Negroni e Pasquale Piro (member of the provincial supervisory commission). All, according to the indictment, had a share of responsibility precisely as “wheels of a cooperative gear”. The magistrate, in examining the positions of some defendants, also recalled the jurisprudential principles contained in the sentences on the fire of the Cinema Statuto of 13 February 1983, which cost the lives of 64 people. As for the event in Piazza San Carlo, he observed that “the real organizer was the City of Turin in its political leadership”. The mayor Chiara Appendino has already been sentenced in the first instance with a shortened rite of eighteen months.
