The irresistible growth of Pade in Italy: next challenge, the Olympics

For the second consecutive year Cagliari hosted the world Padel show. In Sardinia the only stage of the World Padel Tour was held (for now) in our territory and after 365 days you have the exact perception of how this sport is evolving in a sudden way. The President of the Italian Padel Federation, Luigi Carraro, is convinced of this: his goal is to participate in the Olympics and to increase the number of Italian stages on the international circuit.

«This year with the possibility of seeing all this public in the stands, while always maintaining Covid regulations, we have had even more the real feeling of the passion that now accompanies this sport. People came from all over Italy to follow the great Padel champions, to see them up close, to snatch a selfie or an autograph. Feeling the warmth of this public has filled us with joy in this second year of the Cagliari stage ».
These are the words of Carraro who is closely watching, numbers in hand, the success of this sport.

«The most impressive result – underlines the president of the Federation – was that already from Thursday, therefore from the round of 16, the tickets were all sold out. The numbers are truly extraordinary. When I was elected president of the Fip (in 2018) in Italy there were almost 750 fields, today we have over 3,600. Practitioners are growing day by day and the members of the Italian Tennis Federation have now risen to 65 thousand. Spain which is considered the most important country in terms of padel in Europe has 85 thousand members. We are fast approaching and this gives us hope for the future growth of our sport ».

At the regional level, Lazio holds 30% of all fields in Italy (followed by Lombardy, Sicily, Emilia Romagna and Piedmont) and Rome is the province with the largest number of fields (826) then Milan, Latina, Turin and Naples. And it is for this reason that the dialogues have begun to try to insert a new Italian stage in the international circuit of the World Padel Tour which currently includes 18 tests in the Open and Master formula in addition to the highly anticipated Final Master to be held in Madrid from 16 to December 19. The countries involved are Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Argentina, Mexico and Spain. The feeling is that soon another Italian appointment can be added, perhaps in the capital …

«Italy – says Carraro – is the country that is growing the most in the world. In 2019 we hosted the European championships, in 2020 the first stage of the World Padel Tour in Cagliari, this year there were the Serie A finals and again the Sardinian stage of the WPT. Here, I believe that in 2022 we can expect some nice surprises. There are various regions of Italy that are in dialogue with the Italian tennis federation… ».
