Both infected with the Delta variant of the virus. It is a 75-year-old who fell ill immediately after receiving the first dose of vaccine and a 60-year-old who was vaccinated with a double dose, but suffering from other diseases
These are the first two serious cases of Delta variant infections in the region. In fact, the only other precedent concerns a man, later recovered, infected by Variante Delta but returning from abroad, always hospitalized in Udine, a reference point for Covid intensive care in the region. Flavio Bassi is the head physician: “I can only say that they are responding well to the therapies that we have started and they bode well, and this I always believe and I firmly believe that vaccination develops a protective antibody response, and therefore it is an additional weapon that we have“.
The Covid intensive care reopens in Udine in the summer after days, in a complicated period because of holidays, with reduced staff, exactly like a year ago. It was July 23, 2020 when two men returning from Albania, father and son, were brought back, then recovered, but the ward remained open until last June.
“We expected to have to reopen given the rise of the infections and we were ready “, explains Dr. Bassi “the organizational process that we had carried out in recent months has allowed us to give an immediate response, without currently reducing any type of surgical activity currently present in this hospital “
