Sea, + 12.5% bathing concessions
In Italy, finding a free beach is increasingly difficult. Over 50% of the sandy coastal areas are withdrawn from free and free use. To weigh on this, first of all, is the exponential increase in all regions of bathing concessions which in 2021 reach 12,166 against the 10,812 of the latest data from the State Property, relating to 2018, registering an increase of + 12.5%. Legambiente denounces this in the report Beaches 2021. The situation and the changes underway in the Italian coastal areas. Among the record regions are Liguria, Emilia-Romagna and Campania with almost 70% of the beaches occupied by bathing establishments. Other marked increases are recorded in Abruzzo with a jump in establishments from 647 in 2018 to 891 in 2021 and in the southern regions starting from Sicily where concessions for bathing establishments went from 438 in 2018 to 620 in 2021, with an increase in + 41.5%; followed by Campania which recorded an increase of + 22.8% and Basilicata (+ 17.6%). Among the coastal municipalities, the record belongs to Gatteo (Fc) and the one that has all the beaches under concession, but incredible numbers are also reached in Pietrasanta (Lu) with 98.8% of the beaches under concession, Camaiore (Lu) 98 , 4%, Montignoso (Ms) 97%, Laigueglia (Sv) 92.5%, Rimini 90% and Cattolica 87%, Pescara 84%, Diano Marina (Im) with 92.2% where only a few meters are left in often degraded areas.
