It arrived for the first time on TV on Rai1 – between March 27 and April 24, 1977 – “Jesus of Nazareth”, a television drama in several episodes directed by Franco Zeffirelli (it can be seen on Sunday 4 April on Tv2000 at 9.15 pm, but fully recoverable also in streaming on RaiPlay). The blockbuster miniseries, which boasts a very rich international cast including illustrious performers and Oscar Awards (Peter Ustinov, Tony Vogel, Laurence Olivier, Anthony Quinn, James Earl Jones, Christopher Plummer, Ian Holm as well as Claudia Cardinale, Renato Rascel and Valentina Cortese, only to name a few), had a great success with the public: at the time it was seen by 400 million spectators all over the world. Almost 45 years after the first broadcast, what happened to the actors who lent their faces to the main characters? Let’s start with Robert Powell, interpreter of Jesus of Nazareth: originally chosen to play the role of Judas, he worked as an actor especially between the seventies and eighties. In the following decades he devoted himself mainly to dubbing (he is the original narrator of many British historical documentaries) and from 2005 to 2011 he held the role of Mark Williams, administrator of the hospital, in the BBC medical drama “Holby City”.
