As for New Gods, it appears that “the parameters of the project went far beyond the structure of a standalone feature film”, it is unclear if this means that Warner was unwilling to develop the project as a franchise or if it will be reworked in the form of a a series.
The major commented on the decision as follows:
Within our list of projects are some that we will not continue development, including New Gods and The Trench. We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration in this process, and we look forward to continuing to work with them on more DC stories. The projects will remain in their capable hands if we decide to restart in the future.
New Gods would have told the genesis of Darkseid: the film was written by Tom King. It would have been the first cinecomic with a budget of more than 100 million to be directed by a black woman. Ava Duernay and Tom King commented on the news:
Ava DuVernay: Tom, I loved writing New Gods with you. I’m sorry that the saga of Barda, Scott, Granny, Highfather and The Furies ends this way. Exploring Kirby’s Fourth World was the adventure of a lifetime. They can’t get it out of my mind. Thanks for your friendship, and remember… #Darkseidls
Tom King: Ava! I am incredibly proud of the work we have done, it has been a joy to see you bring your passion and talent to build these characters. I really felt that Kirby’s legacy was honored, and I wanted them to continue. That scene between Barda and Scott was… heck.
