Poggio a Caiano and the world of opera mourns the baritone Giorgio Gatti, who died today in Rome at the age of 72 due to Covid. His condition worsened in recent days until he was hospitalized in intensive care in a hospital in the capital where he had lived for many years. For him, however, there was nothing to do. He leaves behind his wife Maria Teresa, two children, grandchildren and mother who lives in Poggio a Caiano and has recently celebrated 100 years. The news spread like wildfire in the village that Gatti continued to frequent with great attachment and affection as soon as he could. A reciprocated love is constantly fed by publications and events dedicated to him. “News that upsets us and leaves us incredulous. – said the mayor Francesco Puggelli – Giorgio Gatti is a son and friend of Poggio a Caiano as well as a great name carved in the recent history of opera. As soon as we heard this very sad news, we got in touch with the family so that, through our voice, all the affection and closeness of our community could arrive. Our condolences are combined with our desire to dedicate a moment of remembrance to Giorgio and all his work as soon as it is granted to us. We gather around the family with sincere affection, affection shared by all Poggesi who today lose a friend and a great artist ”. A versatile artist with a great stage presence, Gatti alternated participation in major international events such as “Tosca, in the places and hours of Tosca”, with more niche but quality festivals such as the Funny Opera Festival organized in Poggio. He sang in important Italian and foreign festivals and theaters, under the direction of illustrious masters, such as Zubin Metha, Semyon Bychkov and Alberto Erede, also taking part in television productions broadcast worldwide. In 2014 he participated as an exceptional guest in the concert for the entrance of the Medici Villa of Poggio a Caiano among the treasures recognized by Unesco. Generous and good, he was always ready to spend himself for the country where he was born and where he left to enhance his talent. His Poggio a Caiano which is now a little more alone.
