In This Where I Leave You, Jason Bateman is Judd, a man who is trying to metabolize the end of his marriage, when suddenly he receives from his sister Wendy (Tina Fey) the news of his father’s death. Arrived for the funeral with his older brother Paul (Corey Stoll) and younger brother Phillip (Adam Driver), to huddle around mum Hilary (Jane Fonda), Judd discovers the unthinkable: even though he was a convinced atheist in life, his father asked in his will that all members of the family follow the Jewish tradition of shivah, seven days of living together under the same roof, receiving the condolences of the closest people. The whole family hasn’t shared the same thing for some time. What will happen?
This Is Where I Leave You, le origini del film con Adam Driver, Jane Fonda e Jason Bateman
This Is Where I Leave You is a novel by Jonathan Tropper, translated into a script by himself. Published in Italy by Garzanti with the title of “Take me Home”, is one of the stages of a rather well-known literary career also in Italy, where his parents arrived Everything can change, Turn around and smile e After you. Also a producer, Tropper is active in the audiovisual world, having been producer and co-creator of the action series Banshee e Warrior (of which he also directed a couple of episodes).
The project was born with a different director and cast, with the only exception of Jason Bateman, linked to the role of Judd from the beginning: alongside him there were to be Zac Efron, Malin Akerman, Leslie Mann, Jason Sudeikis and Goldie Hawn, directed by Adam Shankman. Eventually not only did the cast change, but they sat in the director’s chair Shawn Levy (A night at the museum), who had never before in his career dealt with a film not aimed at children.
The change of cast, however, has hidden a funny paradox: in the finished film Jane Fonda she plays Judd’s mother, who in the novel remembered how her mom exercised with Jane Fonda’s famous fitness videos, looking more beautiful than her!
