Yesterday was the last day of work as a general practitioner for Dr. Giuseppe Clemente, as today is his 70th birthday. Hundreds wanted to pay him a warm greeting in his office in via Monte di Dio. The professional, specialized in cardiology, otolaryngology and forensic medicine, had requested and initially obtained from the Campania Region the possibility of an extension until 31 December of his work performance as a general practitioner, subject to the approval of ASL Napoli 1. In recent days, however, the cold shower arrived, given that his request for treatment in service in derogation to the limits set by current legislation was rejected by the ASL. “With regard to the request, it is announced that it cannot be accepted as the conditions for the impossibility of proceeding with the assignment do not exist, as 68 general practitioners have recently been assigned by the Region”.

Assisted without a general practitioner

This decision was bitterly welcomed by Dr. Clemente, primary care physician in District 24, and by his 1600 patients. “The extension would have allowed my clients to change doctors in a less traumatic way. To date 1400 have been discovered. Many need life-saving prescriptions, such as cancer or diabetic patients on insulin therapy or those who need of anticoagulants to prevent stroke and until they have a new general practitioner they will have difficulty in prescribing. In the San Ferdinando area there are obvious shortages of general practitioners and given the pandemic emergency, the no to the extension is not understandable for another three months of my performance “.
