Dizziness is an unpleasant sensation that everyone has experienced at least once in their life. They give an impression of sudden movement that can affect ourselves or the space around us. Very often dizziness is not noticed too much, it is thought to be a passing disturbance caused mostly by environmental circumstances, such as being at an excessive height. But it is good to pay attention to dizziness and deafness because they could be the alarm bells of this disease.

We are talking about Menière’s disease. It is a disease characterized by dizzying crises that can last up to a few hours. In these cases, vertigo could be associated with tinnitus, ringing in the ears that the person can hear but which is not caused by any external agent. Other symptoms of this disease can be sudden deafness, nausea and vomiting. It is always very important to seek medical attention when these symptoms occur. Only the doctor will be able to carry out further analyzes and arrive at a certain diagnosis.

Beware of dizziness and deafness because they could be the alarm bells of this disease

Menière’s disease is a disease whose causes are not yet known. Currently there is no cure, only the symptoms are treated so that they do not worsen the patient’s quality of life. It appears to mainly affect women between the ages of 40 and 60, and can be unilateral or involve both ears (bilateral). On average it affects between 30 and 190 people per 100,000 inhabitants.

Symptoms of Menière’s disease

Menière’s disease is characterized by acute vertiginous crises, of variable duration, which can last up to several hours. During these crises, one gets the impression that the surrounding environment revolves around oneself, hearing is reduced and muffled, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus) is heard. In some cases this symptomatology could be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sweating. Deafness should be a symptom to pay special attention to. In fact, during the first crises you might only perceive a muffled hearing sensation that is not too worrying. But over time this sensation may worsen until it leads to total hearing loss in the affected ear. The frequency of seizures is variable: it can be rare (once a year) or frequent (once a month and more).

Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis is usually made after a thorough check-up by your doctor, based on the evaluation of the symptoms that the patient reports. In addition, an audiometric test may be required to assess any hearing damage and an MRI of the brain to rule out other diseases. The planned therapy is pharmacological and is based purely on the alleviation of symptoms: to date, in fact, there is no cure for this disease.
