A Dutch production that speaks of Holland
This time the usual battles, the usual landings and the most famous settings of the last world conflict are not protagonists. The Dutch production film, entitled “The Forgotten Battle”, tells of the difficulty with which the allies managed to reach Belgium, via Holland. The battle of reference is that of the Scheldt, fought on several occasions from October to November 1944. The protagonists are respectively:
- a young English pilot son of a general present in the mission;
- a local girl with her brother involved in the Resistance;
- a German soldier who lives the whole story first on one side and then on the other.
Moving and poignant this truth film in Netflix’s Top Ten that will thrill us incredibly
The film that objectively flows thrilling in its abundant two hours of length is a perfect mix of action, story and sentiment. It looks perhaps more like a documentary, but with a really accentuated realism, thanks to the skilful direction and skill of the performers. All the negativities of the Nazi occupations and the desperate attempt at rebellion of the local populations are reported. At the same time there is also the desire to make the public understand that there must be some pure soul in the German army. The historical picture is represented in a very correct way, without frills, inventions for the public and box office catching scenes.
The film is intertwined with the story
The Battle of the Scheldt, which took place in Dutch Zealand is one of those lesser-cited, but no less important theaters of war. Many troops of the allied coalition were sent here, including the British, Canadians and Poles. The declared objective was to take over the port of Antwerp, precisely through the occupation of the Schelde river. According to historians and the military themselves, the victory of the Schelda represented the first real step towards the end of Nazism.
