They called him The Lonesome Crouching Nude and it is a painting by Pablo Picasso, made during the so-called Blue Period, that Oxia Palus, a company specializing in the use of technology to recover lost works of art, is managed to reconstruct and that was hidden behind another painting by the Spanish author, Il Pasto Cieco. The new design had already been partially revealed through the use of X-rays but the aid of Artificial Intelligence made it possible to admire it in a more coherent way to how it was thought.
The work took place starting from X-ray images, so Oxia Palus programmed the artificial intelligence to complete the painting with Picasso’s typical brushstrokes, imitating his style. The result, which not only included the coloring of the painting but also the thickness and irregularities of the painting, was then 3D printed..
George Cann, co-founder of Oxia Paul, contextualized the genesis of the work and the work that was done on CNN. “At the time, Picasso was poor and the materials he used quite expensive, so it is likely he had to choose to paint over The Lonesome Crouching Nude“.
The result was also analyzed by Ty Murphy, Picasso specialist who works for a company, Domos Art Advisors, which deals with analyzing and evaluating works of art, who explained to the American newspaper that what was produced by artificial intelligence at first sight it actually looks like a painting by the artist but that, on deeper analysis, an expert would actually be able to discern several differences. At the same time, Murphy said he was confident about the developments that, by combining AI and 3D printing, will take place in the coming years. Going then to defend the theme of using machine learning, debated in the field of art experts, to bring lost works back to life.
The Lonesome Crouching Nude painting will remain on display until Sunday at the Deeep: AI Art Fair in London, an exhibition that has been designed to give visibility to the latest developments that unite the world of art with that of technology, from experiments such as the one described above to NFTs.
