New international triumph for the Maneskin, winners of the MTV European Music Awards as best rock band. It is the first Italian success in one of the international categories in the history of the EMAs. No artist from our country had managed to make it this far, not even the nominations. And in Budapest contending for them for the scepter were groups of the caliber of Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, Kings Of Leon and The Killers.

On stage they showed up dressed in black and gold, with frontman Damiano in shiny leather briefs, boots and suspenders. Their look would be enough to send a clear signal in support of freedom of expression and the battles for LGBT + rights, but the Maneskins also wanted to underline it in words. “This year, in particular, we must be proud of our country for the results achieved not only by us, but by many sportsmen and cultural personalities”, they say, “sin for civil rights, where we continue to lag behind and instead for us it would have been the most important victory “. The MTV event took place in a country like Hungary in the crosshairs of the international community for the lack of respect for the rights of the LGBT + community. “We are always lined up on that side – underline the four boys – both on stage and in private life”.

During the event there was no lack of appeals for inclusion and equality regardless of sexual orientation, starting with the OneRepublic concert on Saturday night in Heroes Square, but also during the show broadcast live in 180 countries .

Show this year inspired by the spas of Budapest and the Danube, which crosses the city, with stages that seemed to float in the water. Maneskin frontman Damiano, bassist Victoria, guitarist Thomas and drummer Ethan inflamed the audience of the brand new Papp Lßszló Budapest Sportarén with their latest single “Mammamia”, accompanied by a giant sign with the title of the song from which they are then fireworks exploded. Ed Sheeran, who garnered the accolades for “Best Artist” and “Best Song”, opened the night surrounded by neon graffiti with his latest single “Overpass Graffiti”, before playing the hit “Shivers”.

Presenting the event was Saweetie, winner also in the “Best New” category, who performed some of her hits and animated the event basking by the pool with glasses of champagne or confronting soldiers inspired by Squid Games in pink dresses shocking and masked. Also on stage Maluma, winner of the “Best Latin”, and the Imagine Dragons, returned to Ema with the new single “Enemy” hit by a fire of laser lights, together with rapper JID and a team of dancers.

As for the competition, the South Korean band BTS received the most awards with four awards including “Best Pop”, “Best K-Pop”, “Best Group” (also beating Maneskin) and “Biggest Fans”. Lil Nas X was awarded “Best Video” with “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, while Nicki Minaj won the “Best Hip-Hop” award. The “Best Italian Act” went, instead, to rapper Aka 7even who won it on Caparezza, Madame, Rkomi and Maneskin.
