Thanks to crowdfunding, the Taverna in Santa Chiara avoids closure- Corriere.it

«Hi, we are Nives and Potito, two friends who run a small tavern in the historic center of Naples, the Taverna in Santa Chiara. Like all catering businesses have accumulated many months of overdue rent, utility bills have never stopped arriving and employees must be paid rightly. Now we go back to being the orange zone and therefore even that small portion deriving from the activity done for lunch vanishes. The Taverna risks turning off its lighthouse on Via Santa Chiara. To prevent this from happening, we ask for your help ». The cry for help was heard.

The crowdfunding launched on the site “Buona Causa” in a few days exceeded the target of 20 thousand euros and the tavern will not close. “I cried, now we are safe and 90% of the contributions, all non-repayable, came from customers”, commented Nives Monda, owner of the typical Neapolitan restaurant, a stone’s throw from the entrance to the cathedral with the majolica cloister, a an area once overrun by tourists and now deserted due to the pandemic. «In December – explains Nives, who works with her partner, chef Potito Izzo – the situation was disastrous, then opening for lunch made us resume. I had made an economic plan for the maintenance of the place but with the new orange zone I realized that I would have fallen into debt, starting with those with the owner of the place.

Faced with the prospect of closing, Nives and Potito attempt to raise funds. “We are convinced to do so – they say – because we believe in the need for territorial economies like ours not to be erased from the face of cities. The city thrives on people and relationships, which, together with the places, make a community. Without the light of the signs, the city goes out. Bad business or big capital arrive, which, if on the one hand bring other job opportunities, on the other hand create a new form of places where the kind of people who have always belonged to them no longer have a way to exist ».

Now Monda wants to try to support other colleagues: «I’m looking for ways to involve other clubs – he says – who need support. I will succeed. But our success has also given rise to other restaurants. A colleague from via dei Tribunali called me and will replicate my initiative, and the same was told by a Neapolitan colleague who now lives and has a restaurant in Puglia ».
