English variant, four positives to Sant’Antonio Abate: it is already psychosis in the Lattari Mountains

“Out of five swabs examined, four were positive for the so-called English variant.” The announcement, with a post on Facebook, is from the mayor of Sant’Antonio Abate Ilaria Abagnale. In the daily report of the infections, the first citizen certifies that the Covid variant is already in the municipality of the Lattari Mountains and probably also in the neighboring countries. Out of 213 positive citizens, four have contracted the variant of the virus that developed in England, which spreads more easily and appears to last longer over time.

The announcement was followed yesterday by new restrictive provisions. The liturgical celebrations were stopped, the city park, the cemetery and the municipal offices were closed, all sporting activities were stopped, a ban on moving in groups or standing in the street was ordered. «The Crisis Unit of the Campania Region has represented to the mayors and prefects that actions are necessary that favor a drastic reduction of physical interactions between people – says Abagnale – also through the implementation of restrictive measures. The data record a significant increase in the number of infections within the municipal perimeter, with the detection, moreover, of the English variant of the virus, characterized by a strong viral load, for which the ASL has fourteen days of quarantine “.

The positive swabs, randomly, are sent to the Pascale institute in Naples to search for the so-called variants. An analysis that the local hospitals cannot carry out due to lack of adequate means and personnel. The mayor of Sant’Antonio Abate was informed of the positivity of four citizens to the English variant but the fear is that similar cases may emerge in other municipalities in the area. What is certain is that the spread of the infection does not leave many doubts. In nearby Castellammare 2 percent of the population is positive. The ASL itself admits that “it is like emptying the sea, for each swab you have to trace dozens of people”.

The difficulty of the Covid offices and managers in these hours is enormous. To the positives able to travel by car, the ASL asks to go to the drive-in of the Antiche Terme which for weeks now has been carrying out hundreds of swabs a day without interruption. Yesterday there were 84 new positives, out of 426 processed swabs and out of a total of 1,362 infected citizens. Among the newly infected there are eight children between the ages of 2 and 9 and six children between the ages of 11 and 16. The third wave seems out of control and after the mayor of Castellammare Gaetano Cimmino, who wrote to the police for a control of the territory, the recommendations of his deputy Fulvio Calì also arrive. “Unruly citizens will force us to ask for the army,” he said, aware of the difficulty of controlling the city even during the day. The curfew at 8pm and the closing of the shops at 6pm limited the afternoon and evening traffic, but still not enough.
