Defective batteries, spontaneous fires: Hyundai in the eye of the storm

According to several Korean sources, Hyundai she would be forced to start a massive one recall campaign – in agreement with the local Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport – to replace all drums present in its electric vehicles currently in circulation: the cause would be found in some spontaneous fires unleashed inside Hyundai cars produced between 2017 and the 2020.

The news came from the Korean site NewDaily, according to which state “found a serious flaw in the lithium-ion batteries provided by LG Energy Solution”To Hyundai for powering its electric cars, without giving more specific details.

The recall, officially launched a few days ago, involves more than 21,000 units of Hyundai IONIQ, 236 electric buses e 32,854 Hyundai Kona modelsLG batteries currently present will be replaced on all these vehicles, possibly replaced with a similar model manufactured by SK. At the moment there is no information on how this defect will be corrected on all the models spread around the world, but it seems to us unavoidable that Hyundai finds itself where to recall all those models that use this specific type of LG battery; the latter, according to some rumors, will be called a bear at least 50% of the costs necessary to complete the recall campaign, given that the defect comes from a product supplied by LG. But the story doesn’t stop there, as the defect leading to these fires would seem to be due to a separator of defective batteries: LG does not produce this component directly, but orders it from an external company, so it is quite probable that the Korean giant wants to make up its own supplier who gave him the offending piece.

At the moment there are many rumors and little information confirmed, but without any doubt within the next few days Hyundai will have to clarify, in particular on his intentions regarding all the other IONIQ and Kona models around the world.
