From the Open days a boost to vaccinations in Sicily. The initiative dedicated to the over 60s and to “highly frail” subjects is contributing to the resumption of the vaccination campaign which had slowed down in recent weeks. The island, however, remains in the penultimate place in Italy for the number of doses administered and Calabria, the only region that has done worse so far, is recovering in these hours and it is not excluded that it may overtake Sicily by relegating it to the rear.
According to the data contained in the report of the Ministry of Health and updated this morning, 77.1 of the doses delivered were administered on the island while in Calabria 76.8. But these data fluctuate and depend on many factors, including the number of vaccines delivered. The fact remains that the vaccination campaign in the last few days has had a decisive acceleration: from Thursday 29 April to Saturday 1 May the total administrations, including first and second doses, in Sicily were 90,554. The first doses administered were 65,118, 66.52% (43,319) concerned people, falling within the current targets of the vaccination campaign, who decided to join the Open day, therefore without booking. In the target 60-69, the subjects without reservations were 63.67% (13,518 out of 21,230). In the 70-79 age group, 55.36% (10,820 out of 19,544) of those who received the first dose from April 29 to May 1 did so by joining the Open day.
But that’s not all: in the over 80 category, the percentage without reservations was 73.77% (5,243 out of 7,107) of the total of those who received the first dose in this age group over the weekend.
The steps forward in the last four days have mainly concerned the elderly population: over ninety years of age the unvaccinated are now only 10.4 percent (81,933 people) while in the range between 80 and 89 years it is lowered to 12.7 per cent.
The prospect is that by the end of May the audience will definitely expand allowing vaccinations to all age groups under 65, with the mass campaign and with that in companies. And at the same time we are working on the students’ immunization plan, so much so that we are thinking about administering the anti-Covid vaccine at school as many years ago with the smallpox campaign.
