The tournament reserved for the best eight players born after 1 January 2000 has started at the Palalido in Milan: they are the Next Gen Atp Finals 2021, the ‘prologue’ of the ATP Finals, from 14 to 21 November in Turin. Alcaraz, Nakashima, Cerundolo and Rune, Korda, Musetti, Baez and Gaston compete against each other. The tournament was won in 2019 by Jannik Sinner, it was not played last year.
You meet them
Lorenzo Musetti, from Carrara, made his debut yesterday in the last match of the day, but ended up losing against the Argentine Sebastian Baez. The first meeting was played by the American Brandon Nakashina and the Argentine left-handed Juan Manuel Cerundolo. He won the first, three sets to one: 4-1, 3-4, 4-1, 4-0.
In the other match of Group A, the two 18-year-olds Carlos Alcaraz and the Dane Holger Rune met, the latter returning from the victory of the Bergamo Challenger. The Spaniard is perhaps the biggest surprise of 2021, the year in which he rose from number 141 to 32 in the ranking, won in Umag and hit the quarter-finals at the US Open. “At the beginning I was very nervous, then I broke up. Coming here was a goal at the beginning of the season. I’m happy to be in Milan and to play this tournament,” said Alcaraz, commenting on his success.
