MANTUA. The bin, floating on the surface of the water, captures waste, from the largest to microplastics, while a small pump expels the filtered water. It’s called Seabin, and it’s at the center of “A sea of ideas for our waters”, the Coop campaign in partnership with LifeGate. This year’s goal is to install 34 new Seabins in Italy, placed in the waters of seas, rivers and lakes to reduce plastic and microplastic pollution. Yesterday morning the Mantuan Seabin was inaugurated, installed at the Canottieri with the participation of the Parco del Mincio, the first regional park directly involved in the campaign. “The installation of the Seabin to protect river waters and the participation and promotion of the campaign” A sea of ideas for our waters “- comments Sandro Aldrovandi, president of the social area Vasta Lombardia – is in line with the cooperative idea of sustainable development to which Coop Alleanza 3.0 inspires its action on the territory and for the communities “.
The Seabin is capable of capturing one and a half kilograms of waste per day, over 500 per year, including microplastics and microfibers. It is connected to the electricity to activate the water pump, capable of treating 25 thousand liters per hour. The waste is captured in the internal bin, which can hold up to twenty kilos, while the water flows through the pump and back into the lake. Requires minimal emptying and cleaning. It works twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and is therefore capable of removing much more waste than a person with a manual collection net.
“In compliance with the memorandum of understanding signed at the beginning of 2021 with the Parco del Mincio – explains the president of Canottieri, Gianni Mistrorigo – our company is now putting into practice a cultural and environmental initiative which it will be able to give adequate prominence through the organization of sporting events right in the water space that hosts the Seabin ».
The annual rental cost, borne by Coop Alleanza 3.0, is approximately twenty thousand euros. “Guaranteeing the quality of the water is a priority of the municipal administration – adds the commissioner Adriana Nepote – in the perspective that the lakes become suitable for swimming”.
“This gift from Coop Alleanza 3.0 marries the environmental policy that the Mincio Park has undertaken – concludes the president of the Mincio Park, Maurizio Pellizzer – to improve the quality of the Mincio waters”.
