Astrazeneca to the over 60s: the new indications of the Cts

The reason? It is soon said. THE viral vector vaccinesVaxzeria from AstraZeneca and Janssen from Johnson & Johnson – according to the directives of Aifa can be given to people aged or over 18 years but, second the new indications of the Cts, it is now recommended for people over 60. “The CTS, in close dialogue with Aifa and the other health institutions in the country, has deemed it appropriate to re-evaluate the indications for the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine because, having changed the scenario, the relationship between benefits and potential risks linked to rare thrombosis changes according to age but also to the changed scenario “, explained the coordinator of the CTS, Franco Locatelli.

Dead girl in Genoa

It was the case of Camilla Canepa, 18 year old girl from Sestri Levante, died days after receiving AstraZeneca vaccination on May 25, 2021: he had participated in the very first open day in Liguria that allowed over 18s to access inoculations. The tragic fate of the very young girl, who suffered from thrombocytopenia, led to heated debates within the scientific community, in which there was above all questioned about the advisability of administering this type of drug to young people and in particular to young women.

The president of the Liguria Region Giovanni Toti, through his Facebook page, he published a letter sent on May 12, 2021 by the CTS to the Regions, in order to justify the voluntary administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine to the 18-year-old who died of thrombosis: “The Cts does not detect any reasons that prevent them from being organized by different regional initiatives, such as vaccination days, aimed at offering adenoviral vector vaccines to all subjects over the age of 18 following voluntary participation / request “.

Regions that cancel or modify open days

By virtue of the delicacy of the situation, many Regions that boasted a busy schedule of upcoming open days have decided to take a step back and proceed to cancel or modify the drug administered.

Valle d’Aosta: in consideration of the availability of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and pending further indications and / or provisions relating to the use of Vaxzevria (formerly AstraZeneca) and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) by the Technical Scientific Committee of the National Health Institute of Valle d’Aosta announces the decision to suspend the administration of Vaxzevria and Janssen in subjects under 60 for the Open days scheduled for 12 and 13 June. Campania: the governor of Campania engages the reverse gear Vincenzo De Luca: “The open days with AstraZeneca are blocked. We had a meeting with the general managers and made this decision for reasons of prudence. We only administer the first doses of AstraZeneca over the age of 60, which is an age group for which there has been no problem anywhere in the world. We will also give AstraZeneca to those who have to take the second dose to complete the vaccination cycle ”.

L’Asl Napoli 2 Nord has announced that it has transformed the planned Astrazeneca open day into a Pfizer event.

Also there Sicily suspended the Anglo-Swedish vaccine as a precaution under the age of 60.

Lazio: “We have suspended the reservations and appointments of citizens in the 18-30 age bracket who had booked the first dose with AstraZeneca during theopen week. They will be reprogrammed with other vaccines “, clarified the regional councilor for health, Alessio D’Amato.

Emilia Romagna: “We – affirmed the councilor for health of Emilia-Romagna, Raffaele Donini – we preferably administer to 60-year-olds, then if we have to keep doses in the fridge without using them, we ask ourselves how to use them, always in compliance with AIFA prescriptions “. At lunchtime news arrives that the Open Days already scheduled in the region, complete with online booking, are coming confirmed, but they will be done only with the administration of Pfizer and Modern. This was decided by Emilia-Romagna “on a prudent basis, pending new indications from the CTS, which are asked to be clear and definitive, on the use of viral vector vaccines”. AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson will continue to be employed only for those over 60 who have not yet been vaccinated. In this sense, on the open day scheduled for June 12 in Guastalla, we will pass from J&J to Pfizer. Same thing for the open days of 3-4 July in Reggio Emilia.

Piedmont: “We await the pronouncement of AIFA”, he explained Alberto Cirio, president of the Region. “We must always evaluate the peremptory nature of the indications that are given. One thing, however, is vaccination on the basis of the vaccines that arrive to you, because people must be vaccinated and we receive vaccines from General Figliuolo. The initiatives in which you can choose are another matter. Where we have been able to organize events related to vaccinations, for example for young people, we will choose the vaccine in strict compliance with the AIFA indications “.

On the occasion of the Open Night torinesi which will be held on Saturday 19 June at Reale Mutua or on the occasion of theOpen Days which will be held from Friday 11 June to Sunday 13 June at the Valentino vaccination center, the vaccine that will be inoculated will be Pfizer. So, also for them, yes to the open days, but change of the serum during the race.

The case of the Lombardy, in which they are not open days have never been scheduled, as the president made clear Attilio Fontana: “We have never had ‘vax days’ dedicated to young people so the problem with AstraZeneca did not arise for us. We follow the directions and as the directions suggest not to use AstraZeneca under a certain age we do not use it. We have other vaccines that we use right now. However, we are always respectful of the indications given to us by the commissioner and the national CTS ”.

Other regions also stated that they are awaiting the decisions of the CTS and the ministry regarding methods of use and administration. Among these is theUmbria which since yesterday has precautionarily suspended the administration of second doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to all subjects under the age of 60. The decision was announced by the commissioner for the Covid emergency in Umbria, Massimo D’Angelo, awaiting the decision of the Technical Scientific Committee (CTS) also on the possible change of drug for the recalls. The Region explained that “following the formal decision of the CTS, the indications on how to conclude the vaccination cycle of citizens under 60 already vaccinated with the first dose of AstraZeneca will be made known”.
