Widespread blackout for many large news sites and thousands of other sites. Hit the online editions of newspapers such as Financial Times, New York Times, BBC, Bloomberg News, Guardian, Le Monde, The Independent, Corriere della Sera and many more. Spotify, Twitch and the Stripe payment service are also offline. The whole thing lasted about an hour: by the end of the morning the services were back online.
The Amazon portal was also offline, as did that of the British government and other governments. On all the message: «Error 503 service unavailable». Problems also for Github, the hosting service for software projects.
The disservice also concerned the vaccines page of Lab24 of the Sole 24 Ore, whose data comes directly from the government repository on Github. The problem was solved thanks to a backup with the latest update available, this morning.
At the moment the causes of the problem are not known but all the sites are no longer visible starting from the second part of the morning. However, this is a vast blackout of the global internet network.
According to some reconstructions reported by the BBC and Reuters at the origin there could be a malfunction of the American cloud computing company Fastly, supplier of many international sites. The company wrote on its website that it was investigating “the potential impact on our Content Distribution Network (CDN) services” and that it had identified the problem.
