The car fleet in Italy is too old: measures are needed to renew it

On the occasion of the World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, UNRAE took stock of the situation on our country’s fleet and on the efforts made by Italy to reach the CO2 emissions target set by the European Union.

In recent times, a great step forward has been made in the field of sustainability: the scrapping campaign supported by government incentives for vehicles belonging to the 61-135 g / km emission range, has allowed 186,000 obsolete cars to be scrapped throughout Italy in the past three and a half months.

The car wrecks have made it possible to lend a hand to the environment, with an estimated saving of 115,000 tons of CO2 per year. During 2020, the Italian car market reached the emissions target set by the EU for the overall European average. The result was 3.4 g / km less than the continental target, calculated according to the NEDC cycle and corrected on the basis of the share of exclusively electric vehicles.

The situation, thanks to the increasing spread of zero-emission and hybrid cars, is destined to improve more and more. Despite the great progress made thanks to incentives and scrapping, the fleet of cars in Italy is still too old: for this reason, the director general of UNRAE Andrea Cardinali, wanted to launch an appeal to the government.

“The most sustainable choice by the Government and Parliament can only be to make the incentives for the purchase of new cars up to 60 g / km of CO2 structural – the words of Cardinali published on the official website of UNRAE – In addition, at least for the current year, it is also necessary to support the 61-135 g / km range, which has provided a contribution equal to three quarters of the CO2 reduction obtained so far on new registrations. We therefore hope that effective measures will appear in this direction in the process of converting DL Sostegni-bis into law ”.

Another important issue on the sustainable mobility front is that of infrastructure charging stations in the area. Data relating to electric cars O ibride plug-inin fact, they show that the highest concentration of sales of these cars was in the North, where charging infrastructures are more widespread.

The will is to broadly expand the charging columns all over the country. Something is already beginning to move, so much so that Enel X has inaugurated the first Italian “electric petrol station” in Rome. The wish of UNRAE is that the bureaucratic obstacles that prevent the spread of the structures will be eliminated, through a detailed time schedule that concretely declines the objectives declared in the NRP for 2026.
