There are thirty new hybrid buses ready to go into service. They were presented on the morning of June 3 and were purchased in self-financing by Atac.
Towards sustainable mobility
The new vehicles were presented during an event that saw the participation of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor Pietro Calabrese. “This new supply of hybrid buses is a very significant first step towards sustainable mobility – said Giovanni Mottura, CEO of Atac – These vehicles, in fact, are able to generate savings in terms of both emissions and consumption. The choice of a mobility system with a low environmental impact, especially in urban areas, must be considered a priority for improving the quality of life of citizens and for safeguarding our future. For Atac it is a strategic choice that will characterize the post-agreed path ”.
By autumn the hybrid vehicles available to Atac will become 100. They will be located in the Portonaccio garage and will serve various lines, including 64, 492 and 490. The new buses, produced by Mercedes, are Citaro models with diesel engines euro 6. These are Mild Hybrid cars that use supercapacitors for energy recovery. It is a technology that allows a saving in consumption of about 10% compared to a traditional diesel. All buses are 12 meters long, with two doors and equipped with the technical standards in use in the company park: AVM system, video surveillance, multimedia monitors, fire protection, LED signs with optimization for the visually impaired, air conditioning, manual platform. They accommodate 26 seated and 86 standing passengers and have a seat for people with motor disabilities.
900 buses by 2021
In addition to hybrid vehicles, 30 other normal buses were also presented during the morning. “We have now started a structural renewal of the Atac fleet” commented the mayor, underlining that “900 buses by the end of 2021” represent “a result of which we are very proud”. “These vehicles – added the deputy mayor Pietro Calabrese – will make a difference on many lines. I also remind you that hybrid buses will replace vehicles that have been in service for over 10 years now, with a reduction of at least 50% of polluting emissions ”.
