The INPS has made it public all his software libraries for iOs and Android related to Spid. The public digital identity system is increasingly essential for citizens to access administrative services. With the software codes published in open source mode will be possible, for individuals and administrations, develop new applications faster and cheaper that integrate the use of the Spid. The goal is to boost the use of the Public Digital Identity System and reduce developer expenses.

The National Social Security Institute wanted to include theopen source in its strategic digitization plan, to create safer software and “Facilitate the production of digital solutions directly in the country, with greater protection for institutions and citizens”, we read in the note with which INPS announced the dissemination of the code. In short, this would be just the dress rehearsal. The institute plans to publish other software in open source mode, enlisting the help of the community of experts to identify bugs or flaws in the systems or to develop new applications faster.

According to the words of the president of the Institute, Pasquale Tridico, the choice to go open source wants to stimulate collaboration between public administrations and create more efficient solutions for citizenship. Furthermore, it is a step towards the digital transition that could also generate benefits for the economy. According to research commissioned by the European Union, investing in open source software and its adoption by companies could generate an increase in European GDP of 100 billion euros per year.

In addition to Inps, the digital transformation department of the Prime Minister’s Office collaborated in the initiative, since the project is in line with what the community is pursuing for the development of free software to support Developers Italia’s Italian digital public services. The source codes of the projects published by INPS are available on the page GitHub
of the institute.
