Digital Terrestrial, RAI and Mediaset start the revolution. Now all the others towards the infamous DVB-T2

With a few months of delay on the schedule, the long revolution of Digital Terrestrial began last October 20, which will end at the end of 2022 with the definitive switch to the now well-known DVB-T2.

Taking advantage of theMPEG-4, RAI and Mediaset brought some of their respective thematic channels in HD: nine specifically for State TV (Rai 4, Rai 5, Rai Movie, Rai Yoyo, Rai Sport + HD, Rai Storia, Rai Gulp, Rai Premium and Rai Scuola), you are for the Italian company, controlled by the holding Mediaset Group (TgCom24, Mediaset Italia 2, Boing Plus, Radio 105, R101 TV and Virgin Radio TV), keeping the main channels where they were for a while longer. Now it’s up to the others.

Local broadcasters, grappling with a series of changes, summarized in the English word refarming, a technical term that can be summarized in the transition from a “narrow” band technology (the old GSM) to a broadband (Umts, Wimax or the LTE).

The activity of refarming will be one of the key points of the transition to second generation digital terrestrial, it will concern in particular the 1,800 MHz band and its transformation through technology to be compatible with the new DBV-T2. Specifically, Italy will be divided into four macro-areas.

Sardinia (area 1) will lead the way with the changes, except for problems always around the corner, from 15 November to 18 December 2021. With the new year, from 3 to 10 January 2022, RAI will activate new frequencies in Sardinia for Mux Rai. Also from 3 January 2022 and until 15 March, via Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Lombardy, except the province of Mantua, the province of Piacenza, the province of Trento, the province of Bolzano (Area 2). But also in Area 3, composed of: Veneto, the province of Mantua, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna, except the province of Piacenza (Area 3).

From 1 March to 15 May 2022 it will be the turn of Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, Basilicata, Abruzzo, Molise, Marche, all inArea 4. With the First of May, until 30 June 2022, the revolution of DTT it will include Liguria, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Campania, in Area 1B. The Mux 1 Rai will be switched off on 700 MHZ and in the VHF band. And so on, until the advent of DVB-T2, the second generation digital terrestrial with HEVC encoding, the technology that allows you to keep (almost) all current channels in a reduced frequency space, will not be definitive. It is therefore mandatory.

Italian citizens will have to retune TV / Decoder to see first if everything works. The failure should be attributed to the fact that the device was either purchased before 2017 (in which case it must be changed) or is not compatible with the codec MPEG-4 (the same adopted now by the 15 RAI and Mediaset channels mentioned above: if you see those, you will have no problems) for any reason. If so, better buy a new device, there are many at bargain prices, thanks also to one of the two bonus TV (combinable) with the possibility of taking advantage of a 20% discount up to a maximum of 100 euros, without looking at the discount reserved only for those who have a very low ISEE, under 20 thousand euros per year.
