If until yesterday, to convey the idea of positioning, we used to say that Ford Tourneo/Transit Connect was the equivalent of Volkswagen Caddy, now this statement has taken on a new meaning as the new generation has effectively become the alter-ego of the German multi-space.
The new Tourneo Connect which will soon be followed by the commercial model Transit Connect, is the first result of the collaboration between Ford and Volkswagen from which we also await a new generation of the Amarok pickup based on the next Ranger and a new Transit Custom / T6.1.
The pinwheel of alliances
Collaborations are also on the agenda in the commercial sector and save (as in this case for Ford) a lot of development costs, as confirmed by the transversal example of Renault Kangoo / Mercedes Citan / Nissan Townstar they share. the same base, electric included, but also the long-standing Sevel partnership between Fiat and PSA, now united under Stellantis, and Renault-Opel, Volkswagen Crafter / MAN TGE and so on.
But back to Ford Tourneo Connect: the actual launch will take place in May 2022 with 2 lengths and a maximum of 7 seats. The range will offer a 114 bhp 1.5 Ecoboost turbocharged engine, a 102 bhp and 122 bhp Ecoblue turbodiesel, both 4 cylinders and a 6-speed manual gearbox with the option ofautomatic double clutch 7-speed for the most powerful diesel that will also be available with all-wheel drive; in this case, gearbox will be manual only. Those who choose 4-wheel drive can also have the lower engine guard installed at the factory.
Space and flexibility
The two short and long wheelbase variants are called “Tourneo” (L1) and “Grand Tourneo“(L2). Both offer space for up to 7 people as well as a high level of comfort and functionality.
If the second and third row seats are not used, they can be folded forward or removed completely. The backrest of the front passenger seat can also be folded down. This extends the useful internal length up to 10 foot – enough to carry a kayak, bulky furniture or ladders easily and safely. Large sliding doors as standard on both sides of the vehicle facilitate access even in confined parking spaces.
The L1 variant has a maximum load volume of 2.6 cubic meters and lengths, depending on the number and position of the seats, ranging from 317 to 1,100 to 1,913 mm. The L2 instead offers 3.1 cubic meters, while the length of the trunk, depending on the seats, varies from 629 to 1,452 to 2,265 millimeters.
Ford Tourneo Connect Titanium L2 (2022)
The range is divided into 4 equipment lines: Trend, Sport, Titanium and Active. Characteristic design aspects are specific to each and range from uniquely designed wheels to aesthetic details. The plastic underrun protection is finished in silver paint and there are additional dark details for the wheel arches, bumpers and side skirts.

Infotainment and safety
Tourneo Connect features an optional 8.25-inch on-board and 10-inch diagonal touchscreen for all four equipment lines. The monitor has separate controls for the navigation system, audio control and air conditioning.
Fully equipped there are a total of 19 state-of-the-art driver assistance functions including standard ones such as Pre-Collision-Assist, collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane assist with position holding aid, hill start assist, front and rear parking sensors, an automatic cruise control with speed limiter adjustable and monitoring the driver’s attention status.
Active Cruise Control, a blind spot assistant complete with Cross Traffic Alert and emergency braking function and a traffic sign recognition system.
A valuable aid in maneuvering
Among the other options we then have the package dedicated to parking area which includes active assistance in parking and exit which detects spaces not only in the direction of travel and can autonomously drive the car in and out of the parking area.
All the driver has to do is step on the accelerator and brake pedals and shift into gear. For versions with automatic transmission, the parking assistant also takes care of driving the vehicle which is so partially automated.
l package of towing assistance now it also facilitates reversing maneuvers and prevents the dreaded “switchblade” effect by intervening if the angle between the towing vehicle and the trailer closes too much. The target position of the trailer is set on the reversing camera monitor using the exterior mirror adjustment control like a joystick: the system controls the steering, calculates the dimensions of the trailer with its sensors and also shows its route via guidelines on the screen.
For Tourneo Connect with 7-speed automatic transmission, intelligent active cruise control with traffic sign recognition includes traffic assistance with stop & go function and lane keeping which provides special highway travel comfort. In addition to the accelerator and brake pedal, the system also controls the steering, especially in slow traffic, and offers a partially automated driving level 2 on which the driver can intervene at any time.
New and standard for all versions of this series is the electric parking brake with Auto Hold function. It facilitates hill starts and optimizes the use of space inside, as there is no handbrake between the front seats. THE fari a LED with intelligent high and low beams are standard on all models: they recognize different traffic scenarios such as highway driving, city, off-road driving and intersections and adjust the light cone and light intensity themselves.
LED rear lights are also part of the standard equipment, but only from the Sport level onwards. For Tourneo Connect, options are also available such as heated windscreen, wipers with rain sensor (standard from Titanium) and heated exterior mirrors (standard from Trend).
