Fisherman finds a huge block of whale vomit weighing 30 kilos: “It’s floating gold, worth more than a million euros”

The one made by a Thai fisherman in recent days was just a miraculous catch. In his net, however, fish did not end up, but rather a huge block of whale vomit. If apparently the thing more arouse a certain disgust, things change if you think that it is actually a matter of very precious substance better known as ambergris, also called “Floating gold” O “Treasure of the sea”Used in the perfume industry. The Indian Ocean is on the whale route and local fishermen know that these giants of the sea could make their fortune: so, when he saw the huge gray mass floating in the water, Narong Phetchara, a Thai fisherman from Surat Thani Province, in Southern Thailand, he immediately realized that it was whale vomit hardened in the open air and that it could be worth a fortune.

So he didn’t think twice to retrieve it and bring it ashore: the man had it analyzed by a team of experts from the Prince of Songkla University who certified that it is precisely the precious ambergris. The results of the tests attested that the storage weighs about 30 pounds: the market value of ambergris it ranges from 35 thousand to 50 thousand euros per kilo, so its value well exceeds one million euros. In short, a real stroke of luck for the fisherman who usually earned around 200 euros a month. “None of the villagers have ever seen or touched a real whale ambergris before and everyone was happy. I intend to sell it because I have already received a certificate to prove that it is real and if I can get a good price, I will retire from my job as a fisherman and throw a party for everyone, ”said the man.

Ambergris is in fact a very precious substance which has been used since ancient times as natural medicine, incense and even as an aphrodisiac: its market value is around $ 50,000 per kilo. What makes its astronomical value is precisely the fact that it is not easily found. In fact, it is formed with the regurgitation that is secreted by sperm whales to digest squid, a food they are fond of. Not only that: not all whales produce it, indeed, it is estimated that only between 1 and 5% of them contain ambergris inside. In addition, being the sperm whales a protected species, their hunting for the purposes of the ambergris trade is prohibited so what happened to the Thai fisherman was truly an extraordinary stroke of luck.
