It was the 1991 when the the first Opel Astra made its debut on the Automotive market and now, in 2021, its newest generation has shown itself. A lot of water has passed under the bridges and, for the German sedan of segment C, it is necessary to register 30 years of career and more than 15 million vehicles sold. Today, however, it has presented itself to the press with a new aesthetic look, with minimal and digital interiors, and with one complete engine range: petrol but also Diesel, without forgetting the presence of the spearhead; a Plug-in Hybrid engine in great shape, which allows the new generation of Astra to also be the first to have an electrified heart in the range. And there’s more: in 2023 its 100% electric variant will also debut, but let’s start with order.

A COMPLETE RANGE OF ENGINES

Opel Astra Hybrid hides under the hood the “on tap” hybrid engine, consisting of the 1.6 petrol 4-cylinder and assisted by the presence of the electric unit which, alone, gives it 110 hp more. The battery has a capacity of 12.4 kWh and allows up to 60 km of electric range. The power unit with the plug can be chosen in two power cuts, with 180 or 224 hp and an 8-speed automatic transmission, with front-wheel drive. Both engines are able to express a torque of 360 Nm.

Let’s crunch some numbers now. The 180hp hybrid reaches a self-limited speed close to 225km / h and burns 0-100km / h in 7.9 seconds. The most powerful option with 225 foals reaches a self-limited speed of 235 km / h and in 0-100 km / h it records 7.7 seconds. Declared fuel consumption is really low, with a maximum of 1.4 l / 100 km, in the WLTP cycle, which will be assessed during the road test.

Spippendo well the chapter engines, but here you can also see the engine a gas also available in two power cuts. The entry level is the 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo with 110 HP, aided by the manual gearbox (declared consumption of 5.5 l / 100 km) but there is also the more powerful 130 HP version (consumption up to 5.6 l / 100 km) which goes hand in hand with the 8-speed automatic transmission. The torque for both is 230 Nm. It answers “here I’m” the engine Diesel with a 1.5-liter 130 hp and 300 Nm engine, available with either a 6-speed manual gearbox (fuel consumption up to 4.5 l / 100 km) or an 8-speed automatic (up to 4.7 l / 100 km) km, related to consumption).

MAGAZINE AESTHETICS BETWEEN PAST AND FUTURE

The new Opel Astra changes, and not a little, especially from the point of view of design. Especially if you look it straight in the eye. Here then we will cross the new grille (already seen on Opel Mokka) with the Opel Vizor front, inspired by the Manta coupé of the 70s, in addition to the presence of the new headlight cut with Pixel Light technology (on request) or LED. Exploring the car body you can see the contrasting black roof, the more inclined pillars for a more slender and sporty look, in addition to the designed tail; all to the advantage of a greater stage presence on the road. Also in the rear is the new design of the horizontally developed LED headlights which together with the upper brake light, however placed vertically, make the gaze converge towards the center of the tail, where the Opel brand and the car model writing are located.

She is 4,374mm long and 1,860mm wide. It is only 4mm longer than the previous model with a wheelbase of 2,675mm, exactly 13mm longer than the previous model. The trunk volume reaches up to 1,250 liters with the rear seats folded down.

MINIMAL AND CLEAN INTERIOR

The new Astra is renewed and “redesigned” inside too, with a very minimal interior in design and a lot of space for technology. The digital dashboard stands out Pure Panel composed of two 10-inch displays, one for the instrument panel which provides essential data and information and one for the infotainment system, for its menus. There is advanced voice control and wireless supports for Apple Carplay e Android Auto.

The physical buttons remain but they are very few, all used to call up quick and easy functions from the infotainment or to control the air conditioner. Space for technology but also for on-board comfort, given the presence of ergonomic seats certified by AGR, a body that encompasses and brings together various orthopedic doctors, and which allow the driver and his guests to better orient and modify their seat. On request, they are equipped with ventilation and heating, with the latter also available for the rear seats.


ADAS AND DRIVING AID

Nourished is the section FENNEL with the possibility of exploiting the cameras and radar sensors for adaptive cruise control, the limiter, the detection systems that warn us of vehicles coming from the side when reversing in addition to the 360 ​​° view, called Intelli-Vision, which completes the equipment of radar sensors. The Head Up Display is a must.

OK, THE RIGHT PRICE! OR NOT?

The new Opel Astra will open the orders in the fall. Versions with plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel engines, with the deliveries scheduled for the first months of 2022. The available versions will be a Sports Tourer sedan and station wagon. For Italy the starting price is 24.500 euro, the minimum to take home the 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 110 hp and manual gearbox. L’100% electric Opel Astra, under the name Astra-e will be available in 2023.
