ESA chooses Turin as the Italian city to support startups. 65 companies will be born in the aerospace sector.
Turin at the head of the conquest of space
The European Space Agency has chosen Turin as the seat of a center to promote and support the birth of Italian startups in the aerospace sector. This new reality will take the name of Esa Business Incubation Center Turin.
As you will surely remember, the city of the Mole is used to having awards for its innovative projects in the aerospace industry. In fact, even the NASA has focused on Turin for the construction of microsatellites that they will film the impacts of asteroids.
The credit for approving the plan is attributed to the Turin Polytechnic which presented the innovative I3P incubator and there Links Foundation projects.
The I3P Incubator will manage the entire incubation program, from the scouting of innovative projects and startups to strategic support, in coordination with ESA and theItalian Space Agency. The Polytechnic of Turin and the LINKS Foundation, on the other hand, will provide technological support to the startups selected for the program.
The project will run for 7 years and, as mentioned, it will involve 65 companies just started and engaged in the race for the Space Economy, which will undertake a unique growth and development plan. The technologies developed will be used in environmental monitoring, mobility and precision agriculture. The possibility that the initiative can be extended to the entire Italian territory is not excluded.

The Piedmont region, together with the regional Chamber of Commerce and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, for the occasion have made contributions available for startups that will be able to stand out in the area. So companies will be able to benefit from financial support for management activities, for center operations and coverage of operational expenses from the ESA BIC program.
The project will start in Piedmont, but could obviously extend to other Italian regions. However, the Piedmont region itself has provided contributions for startups that will be born locally or that will converge in the Piedmont area.
Goal of the center
Turin aims to support the technological development of new innovative companies based on aerospace technologies, with both upstream applications (communication systems, satellites, software for the control of space missions) and downstream (application of aerospace data and technological solutions in other sectors such as environmental monitoring, mobility, logistics, precision agriculture).
When do we start?
Everything will start from next October 2021 with the launch of a open call for startups and entrepreneurial projects. Three annual selections are planned in collaboration with the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency: the selected startups will receive free technological and business support services, as well as financial contributions for the development of innovative products and services. The path to market entry is scale-up of businesses will also be supported by industrial, institutional and financial partners of the ESA Business Incubation Center Turin.

The Investors Club, LIFTT, RedSeed, the fund dedicated to aerospace Primo Space, NEVA Sgr, RIF-T, Finpiemonte Partecipazioni, CDP Venture Capital, Intesa San Paolo have chosen to join the project. In particular, the Intesa San Paolo group will provide specific credit lines for new businesses incubated in the center and Finpiemonte Partecipazioni will offer investment opportunities with instruments equity O quasi-equity.
The words of Andrea Tronzano, councilor for the development of productive activities of the Piedmont Region
“Piedmont must be recognized for what it is. Ua land made up of human skills, excellence in research, companies capable of always being at the forefront, development policies that are projected into the next decade and not into the future. This news confirms that here, in our land, not only the future of our nation but also that of Europe will be built and aerospace will be one of its pillars. Furthermore, all this confirms the validity of a team game that we have achieved in recent months”.
