Mandello (Lc). For the 100th anniversary of Moto Guzzi, two gifts: the first, dedicated to enthusiasts, is a hi-tech two-wheeler; the second, a tribute to tradition and the territory. It is a certainty. The gifts: the flamboyant V100 Mandello, Sport tourer that introduces the Casa Lariana into the new era, and the futuristic project of the new factory with its museum, the work of the American star architect Greg Lynn, ready in 2025. Certainty is indicated in the celebratory slogan : Moto Guzzi, Road to 2121, as if to say that in 100 years Moto Guzzi will always be there, in Mandello, to celebrate the bicentenary.
Michele Colaninno, product development manager of the Piaggio group, did the house honors in the historic factory in L’Aquila; in the front row, his father, Roberto, president and CEO of the multinational, with the archistar Greg Lynn and the mayor of Mandello, Riccardo Fasoli, who were then joined by Attilio Fontana, president of the Lombardy Region. Outside the legendary red door, a stone’s throw from the lake, a multitude of Guzzisti also arriving from abroad. “For Moto Guzzi it is the second youth – says Colaninno Jr, president, among other things, of Piaggio Fast Forward in Boston, a technological center of excellence that looks at the mobility of tomorrow – and it was decided to invest in the new site, always in Mandello, the Guzzi headquarters ». An important choice for the territory and employment, taken with the awareness that taking the project to another part of the world would cost less. «But Moto Guzzi is here and here it must stay – the words of Colaninno Jr – and we have no fear of Japanese and American competitors. We will have the best technology in the world. The brand is in excellent health. They were difficult years, in 2004 we had to start over from the rubble. Today, however, we have reached the sales record ».
The new facility will have the characteristic of being “open”, that is, accessible to the public, a mix of modernity and future, complete with a hotel, in the name of sustainability. And in this regard, Guzzi is also following the rapid transformation underway in the world of mobility. «That of the new electric technology is a path that Piaggio has decided to undertake – the president pointed out and to Roberto Colaninno -. The program launched this year is being implemented punctually as investments, human resources and research. It is a challenge that we cannot fail to take up and sees us totally committed. We are focused on achieving the goal of changing Piaggio’s DNA, from a mechanical company to an electrical-electronic reality by 2030 ». Finally, from Colaninno Sr, the inevitable point on the accounts: «We are satisfied with the quarter and we must now be able to manage the problems of the moment: transport, expensive raw materials, lack of components such as chips, longer transport times. But all this is part of the life of a company ».
