Tender for the Webuild – Pizzarotti – Astaldi consortium. Another step in the construction of the Palermo – Catania – Messina
Rfi (FS Group) has awarded the integrated tender for the doubling of the Fiumefreddo – Taormina / Letojanni railway section along the Messina – Catania for an amount of approximately 640 million euros. The work will be assigned to a consortium of companies whose lead partner is Webuild, and the principal companies Pizzarotti and Astaldi. The Fiumefreddo – Taormina / Letojanni represents the first functional lot of the section that from Fiumefreddo reaches Giampilieri, another fundamental step towards the construction of the entire Palermo – Catania – Messina axis, work included in the list of those entrusted by the Government to an extraordinary commissioner.
The completion of this first lot, and hence the adjective “functional”, will already bring benefits both for passengers and for freight transport. In perspective, the technical conditions will be created for a reduction in travel times between Messina and Catania, a potential increase in journeys as well as the circulation of freight trains at European standards.
The project involves the construction of 15 kilometers of new double-track line, of which 10 in the tunnel, between Fiumefreddo and Taormina, with a connection to the Letojanni station. As part of the works, the stations of Fiumefreddo / Calatabiano, Giardini / Alcantara and the underground station of Taormina will be built, as well as new viaducts, including one over the Alcantara valley about 1 kilometer long and with a span of 120 meters in length.
Day 23, the start of the executive design of the second lot of the section between Taormina and Giampilieri was delivered, while the works on the doubling site of the Bicocca – Catenanuova section are at an advanced stage. For the further five lots of Palermo – Catania, the opinions of the Superior Council of Public Works were obtained in order to start the Service Conferences for the approval of the final projects.
