The Decalogue of Family Pediatricians for parents is online. “We are ready to take care of the 12-16 bracket, but too many regions are still overdue on the implementation agreements. Act now to get them back to school safely”
Rome, June 23, 2021 – Ten answers to as many “why”, designed to make parents of children between 12 and 16 understand the importance of vaccinating their children against Covid-19. This is the spirit of Decalogue proposed by the FIMP and shared in a training webinar which saw the participation of over 1300 subscribers. The President of the Italian Federation of Paediatricians Paolo Biasci explains: “Avoiding a disease that is dangerous for oneself and for others, rare deaths, hospitalizations for complications, sindrome Long-Covid, the interruption of school attendance and social activities, and then contain the infections of elderly relatives and schoolmates who are not vaccinated or not fully immunized, contribute to the control of the pandemic and variants of the virus and finally create awareness of the importance that everyone plays their part even among adolescents. These are our indications for Italian parents who approach the vaccination of their adolescent children with a thousand questions. With immunization of boys their health, that of their grandparents and of the whole community, gains us ”.
At what point, however, is the vaccination campaign in the studies of family pediatricians? “We already signed a Memorandum of Understanding three months ago, promptly responding to the appeal of Minister Speranza and General Figliuolo – declares Biasci – but many, too many Regions are still back on implementation agreements. The signed document would also allow us to deal entirely with the National Vaccine Prevention Plan, freeing up resources in the Prevention Services to be dedicated to other activities. We ask nothing more to be able to vaccinate our children. Only in this way can we guarantee them a return to school in total safety and the recovery of vaccination coverage “.
The approval of the use of the vaccine against Covid-19 also for the 12-16 age group has recently come from the Italian Regulatory Authorities. The importance ofimmunization of adolescents in the words of Mattia Doria, National Secretary for Scientific and Ethical Activities of the FIMP: “The new variants emerge where vaccination coverage rates are low. And it is now proven that minors get sick with the same incidence as adults – albeit with fortunately lower percentages of severity – and which represent a potential source of spread of the virus in all areas of life frequented: from meeting places, to gyms, to school. We must also not forget the psychological impact that the first total lockdown and the second in fits and starts of the winter just ended, had on our children. We must put in place all the measures that allow us to prevent it from happening again: vaccination is one of these measures. The more successful the more widespread ”.
“We do not have to never let your guard down on pediatric vaccinations – declares Giorgio Conforti of the FIMP Vaccines Area – not only for Covid-19, but for all the vaccinations of the Calendar which in the first lockdown suffered a collapse, which then became transversal and widespread. The contraction was less sensitive for the Primary Cycle (up to 2 years) and in those Regions where the Family Pediatrician vaccinates. On the other hand, it was the World Health Organization itself that recommended matching immunizations with Health Reports, which are key steps of our taking charge of the child. As we also wanted to remember in our decalogue, protecting the little ones means protecting the whole community. To do this, a vaccine is enough. “
