AMD has finally rolled out the long-awaited technology FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) which allows you to maximize in-game performance with very little loss of image quality. The technology was announced by AMD during the conference held at Computex 2021 and now that it has been officially launched it is ready to challenge Nvidia’s DLSS, thanks also to its “open” soul that supports both proprietary and third-party hardware.
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution brings an incredible increase in performance, while maintaining high image quality. According to AMD, this technology improves performance, on average, by 2.4 times. This allows you to raise the frame rate, lower latency and have a more responsive gaming experience. FSR also, as open, is available for numerous GPUs and platforms, including some Nvidia video cards and console.
It will then be possible to choose between different quality settings of the FSR: Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced e Performance. The former produces an image with nearly identical quality to native rendering and should be chosen when the highest possible quality is desired. The setting Qualityinstead, it produces a high quality image with a noticeable performance gain. Balanced instead it aims to create a balance between image quality, which however does not differ much from native rendering, and a greater performance gain. Finally Performance aims to slightly reduce the quality for the benefit of performance.
AMD during the presentation showed some examples of how these four modes affect FPS during gaming sessions. In Godfall, for example, with an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT and using 4K resolution in Epic mode with RT active, you have the following results: 59 FPS with native rendering, 87 FPS in Ultra Quality mode, 106 FPS in Quality, 123 FPS in Balanced and 145 FPS in Performance.
FidelityFX Super Resolution is able to increase gaming performance even in laptops: AMD leads the way with the Radeon RX 6800M, with a performance increase of up to 1.9x in The Riftbreaker. Older GPUs will also benefit from this technology, such as the Radeon RX 580 which will see an approximately two-fold performance boost on Terminator Resistance.
FidelityFX Super Resolution technology is compatible with:
- Radeon RX 6000/6000M;
- Radeon RX 5000/5000M;
- Radeon RX Vega;
- Radeon RX 500;
- Radeon RX 480/470/460;
- Ryzen 2000 processors with Radeon Graphics and later;
- Nvidia Geforce RTX serie 30;
- Nvidia Geforce RTX serie 20;
- Nvidia Geforce GTX 10 and 16 series.
The games that support the technology as of today June 22 are Godfall, The Riftbreaker, Anno 1800, Evil Genius 2: World Domination, Terminator Resistance, Kingshunt e 22 Racing Series. Più avanti si aggiungeranno anche Far Cry 6, Resident Evil Village, Forspoken, Myst, Dota 2, Necromunda: Hired Gun, Baldur’s Gate III, Swordsman Remake, Farming Simulator 22, Asterigos, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodhunt, Edge of Ethernity ed Evil Genius 2.
