Important news from Rome about an eviction in via del Caravaggio. But that’s not enough

Gives Roma important news arrives. We have been talking about the clearing of a building in via del Caravaggio, former headquarters of the Lazio Region, occupied in 2013, where more than 100 families stay. The solution identified is that of passage from home to home with 77 lodgings made available by Ater and the Region and 13 by the Municipality of Rome. Single households would go into a cohousing. Therefore we should not get to the forced eviction with the public force, but the path identified is the right one of the passage from home to home and obviously in public housing, taking into account the economic conditions of the families concerned.

It is quite clear that the path taken by the dialogue and of search for solutions without making the housing question a fact of public order it can only be underlined as positive. It is therefore important that the path undertaken in the “political and social” management of the evictions does not represent only a swallow that does not make a spring and that the housing issue is addressed, not only of evictions but also structural evictions and expropriations.

Now the transition from home to home must become there method of approach to the question of evictions, evictions and expropriations, abandoning the unthinkable and unsustainable methods of “Salvinian” approach to the question. I would like to point out, in this context, that in Rome for example from 1 July 10 evictions per day will be carried out by the public force. This means that every two weeks in Rome alone, the public force will evict 100 Roman families, without them being, to date, guaranteed a passage from home to home, if they have economic and social conditions that they do not allow him to find sustainable housing solutions on the market.

So, at least in Rome, another 100 social housing would be needed every two weeks and this only to face evictions, and not to mention the families in the ranking or those with expropriations. It applies to Rome. It applies to all of Italy. But for the primary candidates in Rome, for example, with the exception of Stefano Fassina and Paolo Ciani, this argument of the need for more public housing is a taboo. The same goes for the government, Anci and regions who still think that the question can be resolved with two small amounts of contributions.

How long will it still take why do the government and local authorities understand that public housing is a strategic social infrastructure? And that the goal of having more public housing you can get it, without land consumption, reusing the immense public and private real estate assets unused today? It is therefore necessary that the solution of via del Caravaggio indicate a possibility to take to get the housing question back once and for all in the context of social rights, not illegal facts to be faced with repressive waves that do not solve anything.

Today is the time for a profound reflection on the action, even generous, of many trade unions, movements and associations which, however, fail to have political weight and to affirm that the housing issue it is a question. In my opinion it is necessary today that the housing movements, tenant unions, third sector associations, forums, urban planners, etc. open confrontation, in a “Coalition for the right to housing”. Not a new organization, not a new structure but a place where everyone, in his autonomy, coagulates on a few qualifying points.

It is necessary in my opinion give life and substance to a critical mass that can affect the government and parliament, regions and municipalities. To ask what? Two requests which in my opinion could unify the Coalition:

1) a great one multi-year plan of public housing with social rent without land consumption;

2) to guarantee the passage from home to home for the evicted and to families in the ranking or oppressed by expropriations.

Without a real and strong critical mass that unifies we will get nothing. This is a great challenge to be launched for a public, strategic, social work such as public housing, without which the problems of housing problems cannot be addressed.
