Delta variant, new tests are coming to Italy to identify it
New tests are also arriving in Italy from tomorrow, which allow to recognize the Delta variant of Covid-19 already at a first molecular analysis of the sample of biological material taken with the swab. They were long overdue because “new criteria for analyzing swabs with a high viral load are needed to be able to identify the Delta variant,” observes virologist Francesco Broccolo, of the University of Milan Bicocca and director of the Cerba laboratory in Milan. Compared to those currently used for diagnosis, the new tests do not look for mutations in the protein in which they are most concentrated, i.e. the Spike used by the virus to invade cells, but look for a mutation called N501Y, present in all major variants so far. known except in the Delta, in particular B.1.671.2, which is the most widespread of the three variants identified in India.
