Rome and Bologna to understand the health status of the center left. Today, from 8 to 21, the polls of the primaries reopen to choose the last two candidates for mayors of the big cities to vote in the autumn. But on the left bank of Italian politics, the results will serve the leaders mainly as a compass to know if the road taken is the right one. Or, at least, shared with the majority of voters.
ROMA – In the capital, the challenge is seven: Roberto Gualtieri, supported by the dem management, will play with the president of the III Municipality and former councilor at the time of Ignazio Marino, Giovanni Caudo, supported by the former mayor, with the deputy of LeU, Stefano Fassina, the civic Tobia Zevi, Paolo Ciani (Demos-Community of Sant’Egidio), the former M5S Cristina Grancio (who runs for the PSI) and Imma Battaglia, historical activist for LGBT rights supported by Liberare roma, civic project close to the MEP Massimiliano Smerigilio and the minis mayor of Garbatella Amedeo Ciaccheri. The goal is to overcome the turnout of 46 thousand voters recorded in 2015, in a left shaken by the ruinous fall, complete with a parade by the notary, of the junta of the «Martiano». The prospects do not look rosy, at least according to the just under three thousand online voting bookings registered on the eve of the consultation. Also because a strong affirmation is needed by the candidate who will then face off in the administrative offices against the outgoing Virginia Raggi, the leader of Action, Carlo Calenda, and the “trident” of the center-right, composed of Enrico Michetti, Simonetta Matone and Vittorio Sgarbi.
BOLOGNA – In Bologna, however, the head to head is only between Matteo Lepore and Isabella Conti: the candidate supported by the Democratic Party against the young mayor of San Lazzaro di Savena, who has Matteo Renzi as sponsor but above all the area inside the dem, Base reformist. Even in this the numbers will be fundamental, because the target is to bring at least 20 thousand citizens to vote in the primary. The premises, however, bode well, given that more than five thousand people have pre-registered. If Lepore prevailed, who also received the endorsement of the leader in pectore of the M5S, Giuseppe Conte, there would be an opening to try to build a broad alliance in the elections, involving not only Leu but also the Cinquestelle themselves.
READ IN THE FIELD – Certainly the issue interests the secretary of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta, who however avoids exposing himself on the eve. But not giving up to send a message to the detractors. “Thanks to the many volunteers who are working to make it possible for thousands of citizens to participate in the primaries tomorrow in Bologna and Rome – tweets the former prime minister, who will vote in the Roman primaries at 17 in Testaccio -. To the critics of our preference for participation, I say that we are like that. And, on this, we will not change ». But now the last word is up to the voters.
