The first victory for theItalbasket women all’European. After the mocking defeat of the debut against Serbia, at the ‘Padello’ Municipal Font de San Lluis’ in Valencia, the blues beat the Montenegro 77-61 and get back in the running for a place in the quarter-finals. Coach Lardo’s team will be back on the pitch in two days, Sunday 20 at 18 against Greece, still dry of victories. Another success would guarantee Italy at least the second place, valid for reaching the play-offs against the third of group A.
Blue always in front
Italy has a better start which, driven by an excellent start from Andrè and Attura, closes the first quarter ahead by 8 points (25-17). Montenegro is mainly Gatling and Dubljevic, but it is Zivkovic at the start of the second quarter who brings back the Balkan selection: 25-23. The blue coach calls the time-out and when he returns to the field he is another Italy. Bestagno and Attura get back to grinding points and we arrive at the long interval at 34-27 Italy. In the second half, a basket by Carangelo gives the blue the maximum advantage (+13, 45-32) in the third quarter, but in the last fraction Italy breaks through the wall of +20 flying to +25 with another magic from Carangelo, the rest is a long garbage time.
