Covid: another 26 cases of the Indian variant in Puglia

Bari – The Indian variate, or Delta as renamed by the WHO, is now present in almost all of Puglia even if the infected subjects, at the moment, are few. The Covid laboratory of the Policlinico di Bari and the Zooprophylactic Institute of Puglia and Basilicata have ascertained other 26 cases that add up to the 25 already identified in recent days, therefore in all 51 infected people who reside in different provinces: Brindisi, the first affected , Lecce, Taranto and Foggia. While investigations are underway on other samples taken in the province of Bari. This was confirmed by Professor Maria Chironna, head of the Covid laboratory at the Polyclinic and coordinator of the network of molecular laboratories in Puglia.

The presence in several provinces testifies that the variant is circulating even if at low intensity. «Next week – explains Chironna – we will make a more detailed report and a new one survey commissioned by the Ministry of Health and the Higher Institute of Health ”and it will be possible to have a more precise estimate of the presence of the Delta variant in Puglia, which worries about its ability to spread rapidly. In recent days even the governor Michele Emiliano said he was “very worried”.
