Florence, June 18, 2021 – “Let’s read the results like this: it is normal that out of the 7 vaccines we developed in a year and that arrived later, two had problems. CureVac on effectiveness “, which was 47%, below expectations and below the indicative success threshold,” ea Sanofi which had technical problems and delays. On the other side we have 5 other vaccines, if we also include Novavax which has had great results, which work great. If all 7 had worked, I would have said we would have had impossible luck as mankind. This is all normal. It is normal that out of 3 mRna vaccines one has a problem. It’s not a drama. ”So at Adnkronos Salute Sergio Abrignani, immunologist of the State University of Milan and member of the technical-scientific committee for the coronavirus emergency, comments on the interim results communicated by CureVac.
“We’ll see what it is. There may be at least 5-6 reasons why vaccines don’t work in phase 3. We’ll see if it’s due to the formulation, dosage, or overestimated phase 1 data. The company probably already knows that. I have worked for 20 years in the vaccine field and I can say that it is perfectly normal for someone to crash in phase 3, or to have problems in phase 1 like Sanofi. Luckily the first vaccine we had worked great. Otherwise I imagine the depression we would have tried in that context if there were any problems. Today is different. We have vaccines. ” Now CureVac could “correct the shot and get to the finish line, but we have to understand what the problem is. Everything is repairable, it depends on how long it takes”, Abrignani reasons. “One of the problems to which CureVac’s under-expected result was attributed is the presence of variants but the answer is that Novavax worked 60-70% even against the South African variant which is among the most problematic. And Pfizer also against. Indian in Gb seems to have an efficacy of 79-80%. On CureVac we await the definitive data. But remember that it is not a drama, we have enough vaccines and others will arrive such as Novavax and Sanofi. The ones we have now are fantastic and they are increasing production capacity “.

COVID TUSCANY 17 JUNE
Vaccines, the figures
There are 44,022,041 doses of vaccine against covid administered in Italy, 89.8% of those delivered, equal to 49,027,202 doses. In detail, 33,603,740 doses of Pfizer / BioNTech serum were distributed, 9,143,105 of those of Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca), 4,538,356 of those of Moderna and 1,742,001 of those of Janssen. This is what we read in the report of the extraordinary commissioner for the health emergency, updated at 16:32 on Thursday 17 June.
The state of emergency
Future of the commissioner structure, smart working, school provisions and bureaucratic procedures. With Italy on its way to white area total, the Government is now grappling with the main issue: the eventual extension of the state of emergency, expiring on July 31st. The issue divides the political forces even within the Executive, with the League pushing not to renew the provision. The green pass in Italy: in these hours a Dpcm could be signed that introduces it and sets the rules in our country, in view of the European one which will come into force on July 1st. And if some Regions have also proposed the inclusion of a self-certification for participation in events, ceremonies, parties, the Minister for Autonomies, Mariastella Gelmini clarifies in view of the Conference with the governors: “a vaccine document or a swab carried out, because the self-certification done at home cannot go well “.
The extension is being considered
On the horizon of the political discussion, however, the most complicated issue remains the extension of the special procedure to deal with the pandemic: from Palazzo Chigi signals would have arrived that favor the extension, as the State of Emergency is linked to the holding of the entire mission structure of the Commissioner for the Emergency, Francesco Son, the Scientific Technical Committee, but also provisions concerning smart working, dad and some work provisions in the case of school classes in quarantine. Given the changed epidemiological situation, the extension would not have the same meaning as the previous ones: it would be above all a way to continue speeding up some procedures. Even if the renewal is technically possible until January 31, 2022, one of the hypotheses would be to end the provision on December 31: a date that would also have the symbolic value of leaving the pandemic behind with the end of the year.
«We haven’t talked to Draghi yet, but in my opinion there are no conditions for dragging the state of emergency. I think it would be a good message, as if to say the worst is over ”, underlines however the leader of the Carroccio, Matteo Salvini, at the Ansa forum. And Fratelli D’Italia, with Giorgia Meloni, adds to the dose: “if confirmed, it would be a crazy hypothesis.” The Democratic Party, on the other hand, is of the opposite opinion: “it is hypocritical to think of canceling it at this stage – affirms Francesco Boccia, deputy dem and head of local authorities of the national secretariat -. It is used for the administrative procedures of the Regions and of the Emergency Commissioner himself ». Minister Gelmini – of Forza Italia – remains cautious but warns: “the assessment on the extension of the State of Emergency will be made by the Government with the support of the technicians and the CTS: the extension must not be abused because they are special powers used only where strictly necessary, but the Delta variant should not be underestimated. Error that the Government will not make ». The Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, remains in line with Palazzo Chigi, for whom the end of the special procedure would be a good sign, but it must also be evaluated in the light of bureaucratic needs. And on almost all of the country that is about to leave the yellow area, he explains: «I insisted that it be a gradual path, but in all probability from Friday we will have 99% of the country in the white zone, so we are objectively in a different phase. But we still need great attention and constant work from all points of view to be equipped and organized in a phase that is still open to battle ». The trend on the decline in infections continues its descent: 1,400 new Covid positives and 52 victims in one day while the positivity rate is stable at 0.7%. We return to the numbers of last October also for the figures on daily admissions to intensive care, only nine in 24 hours and 101,855 people are currently positive for the virus in Italy.
Salvini wants to remove the masks outdoors
“I will talk about it with Draghi, it will certainly be our proposal. If all of Europe is going in this direction, even if in reality it is less good than us, we must also consider this opportunity”. Thus the leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, answering the question whether he will explicitly ask Prime Minister Draghi to remove the obligation to wear masks outdoors, as happens today in France. Salvini told ‘Radio too’, broadcast on Rai Radio 1.
The state of emergency
“I am absolutely in favor of the extension of the state of emergency. It is not over, although we are certainly in a positive phase. But, in the world, the pandemic still exists. In 2021 it caused more deaths than in 2020. So we will have to continue. to be careful “. Walter Ricciardi, advisor to the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, told Adnkronos Health about the possible extension, to December 31st, of the state of emergency expiring on July 31st.
All theItaly, or almost, is ready to return to open all activities in white area. And with the green pass now almost in your pocket. The digital green certificate could arrive in our country before July, the date on which the European one is expected, to move from one State to another of the Union. A CDM could already meet this week to formalize and file the details of the draft of the new decree that will introduce the new pass. The symptoms of the recovery are also confirmed in the symbolic place of the pandemic: the Municipality of Codogno, who lived through the nightmare of the virus first of all, is finally ‘Covid free’.
With about 105 thousand people currently positive (in Campania over 48 thousand recovered were erroneously indicated among them), from next Monday the only yellow area on the contagion map will be the Valle d’Aosta, ready to go white the following week. The trend is also confirmed by the figures of the latest bulletin of June 15: 1,255 new Covid patients, 63 victims in one day and the positivity rate dropped to 0.6%. There are now 504 patients hospitalized in intensive care and 3,333 in ordinary wards. Everything therefore gives hope that the country is moving towards the end of state of emergency: the last extension of the provision will expire on July 31 and for that date, cancellation may be expected of the obligation to wear a mask outdoors. A new regulation would however be necessary, to allow some structures – born to cope with the pandemic – to continue their functions, such as that of the Covid emergency commissioner, as well as providing for new rules on the smart working and other provisions on the use of masks. The only squeeze could come on travelers arriving from Great Britain, where the delta variant of the virus, for which the mandatory quarantine could be arranged in the coming days once they arrive in Italy.
In view of the end of July, in the meantime, amusement parks, banquets for weddings, fairs and ceremonies in general are starting up again – even in the still yellow regions. For now, discos remain closed everywhere, whose opening has not yet been announced. And soon, to check the certificate for access to this and many other activities, there will be law enforcement and public officials. But it won’t be like that everywhere. At a concert, in front of stadiums or discos, the managers of public places or places where the events take place will have the right to check the documentation. The free green certificate already exists: to have it you must be vaccinated against Covid or carry out a test with negative results in the last 48 hours or be cured of the infection. From 1 July, however, everything will flow into the European system and before the end of this month it could already be digitized with the ‘Qr code’ system (the identification code that reveals the various information) as a pass for the various activities. For those who have not yet made the recall, the pass is temporarily valid fifteen days after the administration of the first dose and until the scheduled date of inoculation of the second: from that moment the certificate valid for nine months will be issued. It can be downloaded through the ‘Immunì app and not at the moment not with’ Iò (the same one already used for cashback), but beyond the software, those who want to obtain the green certification in non-digital format can also contact the family doctor, pediatrician and – perhaps – the pharmacist. However, the document can also be revoked in the event of a new Covid infection, which involves the cancellation of the pass.
