First session at Le Castellet with the W12s in front of the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Perez. The reds detached with the Monegasque at 1 ”5 and Sainz at 1” 8

Mercedes and Red Bull immediately lead the first free practice sessions of the French GP. Valtteri Bottas (1’33 “448) and Lewis Hamilton (1’33” 783) were at the top of the time list ahead of the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen (1’33 “880) and Sergio Perez (1’34” 193). The Alpine starts well

The Alpine, which is keen to do well at home, has a good start to the French weekend. Esteban Ocon, who has just renewed his contract until 2024, is fifth in front of Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren. Fernando Alonso’s second Alpine was 7th ahead of Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri and Lando Norris’s second McLaren.

McLaren pays homage to Mansour

Of note, at McLaren, the homage to the late historic former owner Mansour Ojjeh, whose name has been written in large dimensions on the hood of the orange single-seaters for this weekend.

How many off the track

It was a session with many off the track, with the riders looking for the limit and the rope points a bit ‘in difficulty with the grip on the new asphalt. Spin and restart for Mick Schumacher in turn 3 and Tsunoda in turn 15. Then excursions also to Raikkonen (turn 2), Sainz (turn 4) and Gasly (turn 2). More sharp spin with a blow on the barriers with the rear end for Sebastian Vettel with the Aston Martin in turn 11. The German damaged the rear end and flattened the left front tire. Also spin for Sainz’s Ferrari in turn 4: the Spaniard lost control of Ferrari on the right curb and ended up wide on the escape route, luckily for him without crashing. Some damage to the bottom of his Red Bull also for Max Verstappen, who in approach of the 12 got on the curb and lost some fragments. At 3 pm the second session.
