Why buy a diesel car today? In reality the correct question would be: why not buy it, if it responds well to what you need? To travel for a long time on motorway routes, the electric car is not yet completely ready today, given the scarcity of the charging infrastructure and the too long times to refuel electrons. But of course we must always deal with the limitations in force in urban centers. Hence the diesel combined with the plug-in hybrid system can prove to be a winning compromise. The Mercedes E-Class, the undisputed star of great luxury journeys, also offers this engine. Over 50 km in electric when crossing cities and the thrift of diesel when venturing into open spaces. And, being the executive range, a high-level power reserve for every need, from full load to the desire to push a little. Observing the on-board computer which, with a full tank, suggests a range very close to 900 km. Numbers you are no longer used to today. The prices of the E300 de Class start at 67,605 euros for the sedan and 69,849 for the station wagon. It is “the” Mercedes, after all.


Since the postwar period, Mercedes-Benz has sold over 14 million cars belonging to the medium-high range which can be traced back to the current E Class; the best-selling model category in the history of the German house. The current generation W213 (S213 Station Wagon) came out in 2016 and has been renewed in recent months. The aesthetic updates of this restyling focus mainly on the front with the rounded hood (power dome), grille and bumper retouching as well as headlight design. In the cockpit there is a new steering wheel with capacitive surface and integrated touch buttons. Finally the Mbux multimedia interface it aligns with the most recent generation. Among the most original functions, we recall the augmented reality navigator (on some set-ups) which shows on the central display the intersection taken by the camera and superimposes a blue arrow indicating the exact point to go to based on the chosen path.


Mercedes-Benz is currently the only manufacturer to produce diesel plug-in hybrid engines. The reasons why others do not follow the same path are complex and it is not up to us to determine who is right, assuming there is only one correct path. Essentially, the compression ignition engine (combustion by compression of the air / fuel mixture) is less suitable than a positive ignition engine (the spark of the spark plug) to manage repeated and rapid shutdown / restart phases typical of a hybrid system, due to the inherent slowness of its procedure compared to the other. Therefore, complexity is added to an apparatus that is more complicated in itself, made more so to mitigate emissions through the current exhaust treatment systems. The fact remains that, from a practical point of view, for the typical big highway traveler who has to start his city trip, however, this type of solution has many advantages, certainly superior to the petrol plug-in. Mercedes currently mounts diesel plug-in hybrid systems on C-Class, E-Class, SUVs Glc and Gle (and their respective coupe variants).


The two-liter four-cylinder diesel of the Mercedes E300 de plug-in hybrid has an output of 194 hp, in addition to the 122 from the electric motor (located inside the gearbox). The maximum combined power reaches 306 hp with a torque of 700 Nm. The declared average consumption (combined cycle Wltp) reaches impressive theoretical values ​​for a two-ton sedan: 1.4 liters per 100 km or 1.6 in the 4Matic all-wheel drive version. As with any plug-in, this value assumes the continuous use of both engines, thus systematically and completely recharging the battery. But even in a realistic driving situation we are at extremely interesting levels: after about 300 km of travel mainly on the motorway, the on-board computer indicated 5 liters per 100 km, therefore a mileage of 20 km / l. Consumption as a small car in a luxury saloon of almost five meters and very brilliant performance. Returning to the official homologation data, autonomy in electric-only mode Wltp ranges from 54 to 46 km. Values ​​close to reality. On the station wagon (85 kg more and subtle Cx deviation) the differences are negligible. Let’s move on to the charging times of the 13.5 kWh battery. Starting from 10% of residual charge, the entire capacity is recovered in about five hours via a 2.3 kW domestic socket; instead it takes 85 minutes with a wallbox or other alternating current station at 7.4 kW.


It starts in the city with a charged battery, if you stay light with the accelerator you cross the whole metropolis in electric and something still advances. By appropriately using the four driving modes specific to the system (Hybrid, E-Mode, E-Save and Charge), the residual energy is conserved for the end of the journey when, once you arrive in the destination city, you return to electric for the last section in Ztl or similar area. Without to forget the possibility of further recharging on the go via the diesel engine, in situations of low power demand, therefore the typical highway gear with high ratio and a thread of gas. The energy recovered in this way is a small fraction, but it is always an additional contribution that can become important to conclude the electric trip without stopping. Naturally, the contribution of the regenerative braking. So at the end of the journey, after having parked definitively, you connect to the column or to the wallbox for complete recharging. The other qualities of the E-Class are well known: perfect road driver, runs smoothly which is a pleasure. Quiet when you are looking for relaxation, powerful when you want to push. And never a smudge, despite the size. Luxury travel is guaranteed.


Like it: record consumption for the category; versatile battery management; excellent driving skills.
Do not like: at this level, the augmented reality navigator would be preferable to have it as standard on all settings; the same goes for the Apple CarPlay / Android Auto integration (controlling the smartphone from the on-board display).


The starting level available for the diesel plug-in hybrid engine is Sport. The standard equipment features: sports steering wheel in nappa leather, multi-zone automatic climate control, Mercedes Me digital services, Mbux navigator, ambient lights with three color zones, folding rear seats, wireless cell phone charging, suspension with Dynamic Select functions, 17 inches. The other set-ups are Business Sport, Exclusive (the one with the traditional “viewfinder”, that is the star on the hood), Premium e Premium Plus. Naturally, in this category of cars everyone builds an almost tailor-made equipment by choosing from numerous options in various degrees of luxury. The turnkey list prices for the version we tested, the E300 de, start from 67.605, 70.462, 71.756, 74.232 and 77.270 euros respectively if rear-wheel drive. For the 4Matic full-face, € 2,806 is added to each set-up. The E300 de Station Wagon instead adds 2,244 euros for the same set-up, with the exception of Premium Plus where the difference is 1,844 euros. The general model of the Mercedes E-Class finally has a starting price of 54,989 euros for the sedan and 57,234 for the family.
