(ANSA) – MADRID, JUN 15 – “Next week” could be the decisive one to deliberate on the possible granting of the pardon to the independent leaders of Catalonia condemned after the 2017 secession attempt: the spokesperson for the Spanish government, María Jesús Montero. For weeks, the Spanish government has been showing its willingness to grant the pardon, a possibility that has sparked opposition.
“To my knowledge there is no date yet,” said Montero, “but we will discuss it as soon as possible.” The government spokeswoman then added: “The most likely scenario is that the issue is discussed before the meeting scheduled between the President of Catalonia Aragonès and Prime Minister Sánchez”, a meeting scheduled for the end of June. “I hope next week”, he concluded.
In the morning, Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo also hinted that the decision may be imminent: in an interview with Andalusian radio Canal Sur Radio, she said that the study of the situation of the convicted Catalan leaders will be ready “within no more than three weeks” . Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to report on the decision to the Chamber of Deputies in early July, according to the Iberian media. (HANDLE).
