Group C opens with the absolute debut of the Skopje national team. The Genoa striker equalized Lainer’s goal (2nd oldest scorer ever of a European), then Gregoritsch and another former Inter player launched the Austrians
Austria beat North Macedonia 3-1 in Bucharest. Complicated match for Foda’s national team against Balkan rookies. Goals from Arnautovic, Gregoritsch and Lainer decide, while Pandev scored the momentary 1-1.
Balanced first half
Tense and balanced game at the beginning of the match. On the one hand Austria aware of having to win to hope to remain in the running for a place in the second round, on the other the Macedonian enthusiasm for the historic debut. And so you have to wait for the 18th minute to see an interesting action. And it’s that of the Austrian goal: Sabitzer’s throw to cut the field from left to right, Alioski blows himself up and Lainer crosses on the fly. Dimitrievski can do nothing, Austria is ahead. The Macedonian reaction comes little by little, but it comes. Ten minutes later Alaba and goalkeeper Bachmann do not deal well with a simple situation and Pandev finds himself a ball to push into the net with an empty net. Goran at 37 years and 321 days becomes the second-most senior scorer of a European. In front of him alone (see the case) an Austrian, Ivica Vastic, who scored at 38 years and 257 days.
The second half is of suffering for North Macedonia. Austria pushes and Gregoritsch makes the test by sending Dimitrievski flying to take away the match in the corner. The last ten minutes of the game, however, mark the change of gear. Gregoritsch himself arrives first in the 78th minute on an excellent cross from Alaba from the left and overtakes Dimitrievski at the near post. At 90 ‘then Arnautovic’s final 3-1, who took over in the second half, also arrives. Another former Inter, like Pandev, who launches Austria to success.
