PADOVA – Two CUAMM employees, the Italian organization based in Padua that trains doctors and volunteers for the health of the African population, they were killed by a barrage of gunfire in Yiron West, South Sudan. Moses Maker, 35, nutritionist, and driver Abram Gulung, 31, both South Sudanese, lost their lives. According to the first information received by CUAMM’s headquarters in Padua, it seems that the two were moving from one county to another in the Yirol region for an inspection, Maker was an expert in child nutrition his job was to identify the children most exposed to the drama of food shortages.
“We have 1200 people in South Sudan, eighty of these are international doctors or nutritionists, the others are part of the local community – he explains. don Dante Carraro, founder of CUAMM – we trained them and now they help us to take care of the health of a population afflicted by civil war and malnutrition, Moses was our point of reference, it had never happened that they attacked us, local authorities are working to understand what it is happened, I believe it is a misunderstanding or a personal mistake, but let’s not forget that in South Sudan there are drunk kids who run around with very dangerous weapons ».
