Covid, vaccine for children and adolescents. The Koch Institute: “Only to those with pre-existing pathological conditions”

The vaccine for children and adolescents has now become a topic of general debate. But the health authorities will decide what to do. In Germany, the Koch Institute in Berlin (Rki) – the institution responsible for the control and prevention of infectious diseases – recommends vaccination against Covid19 only for children with pre-existing medical conditions. The recommendation will be officially published on Thursday, according to what was learned by the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine from the spokesman for the Robert Koch Institute.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) of Rki indicates some specific cases in which the vaccine would be indicated. The recommendations refer exclusively to vaccination with BioNTech-Pfizer, which goes by the trade name of Comirnaty. According to the report there is an increased risk of serious Covid 19 in children and adolescents aged 12 to 17 if subject to obesity, to some immune system disorders, the down syndrome, a’heart failure pronounced as well as a severe form of cyanosis. In these cases, the trend is in favor of vaccination.

In addition, the Commission continues, vaccination is indicated for some forms of lung diseases in which lung function is permanently impaired. Finally, a limitation of the kidney function, malignant tumor diseases as well as chronic diseases of the nervous system. These are considered valid reasons for recommending vaccination. The commission also lists “syndromic diseases with severe impairment” in the list of relevant pre-existing conditions, but without naming them in detail. There are also indirect causes that can be evaluated.

The Commission recommends vaccinating children and adolescents aged 12 and over if “they have relatives or other contacts who are at high risk for a severe case of Covid 19 and who cannot be vaccinated themselves”. The same is true if there is a suspicion that vaccination protection in these people is not sufficient – this concerns, for example, patients whose cuthe immune system is artificially suppressed during medical treatment. For all other children and adolescents, the vaccination commission does not recommend Covid19 vaccination. “The use of Comirnaty in children and adolescents aged 12-17 years without pre-existing pathological conditions it is generally not recommended at this time, ”states the draft decision. However, vaccination would be possible “if the pediatrician recommends it, and if the guardian wishes it and accepts the risk”. The recommendation will be officially published on Thursday, according to what the German newspaper has learned Frankfurter Allgemeine by spokesperson for the Robert Koch Institute. The version will appear in the section of the “Epidemiological Bulletin” on the RKI website.
