The curtain opens on June 9, 2021 for three intense days The Third Reich, work that marks the inaugural moment of the director’s presence Romeo Castellucci as Grand Invité at the Milan Triennale, a path that will accompany the Milanese cultural institution for the four-year period 2021-2024. One of the greatest masters of the historical period ranging from the epigones of the short century to the dawn of the new millennium, Romeo Castellucci , co-founder of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, Leone d’Oro at the Venice Biennale and Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic, is a reference point in Europe for the programming of contemporary theater and opera. An artist who in a complexity of forms and formats questions the crucial questions of the contemporary, often archaic issues, which emerge in current history.

ROMEO CASTELLUCCI AT THE MILAN TRIENNALE

It will take place as part of the festival FOG Triennale Milano Performing ArtsThe Third Reich, with the collaboration of Scott Gibson for sound and Gloria Dorliguzzo for choreography; the show opens the field to reflection on the word, through a retinal device based on the spectral representation of all the names, which individually projects a sequence of all the nouns of the Italian vocabulary on a giant screen. Under observation is the reflection on communication and language, on the dictatorship of words and names, in their violent form, inculcated and obligatory, as a figure of our time. A military aggression it is the one that Castellucci prepares, thanks to an aesthetic and sensorial bombardment that imposes and imprints in the visual cortex the nouns (about 25,000) that potentially represent all the objects of reality with a name. The sequence speed of the images is commensurate with the retinal and memory capacity to hold back a word that appears in the flash of a twentieth of a second.

LANGUAGE IN THE THIRD REICH

The title refers to the Third, the language of Empire studied by philologist and finisher Victor Klemperer, who analyzed the orchestration of the cultural system of signs of the National Socialist linguistic imaginary, their vehemence and ability to engrave beyond meaning. Castellucci refers to the diary in which the philologist noted the ways in which propaganda altered the German language, recording the different possibilities of enslaving a language, and thus also the thought itself, in order to manipulate the masses. The word can therefore become the vehicle of an undemocratic power, revealing its dark side, of induced modification of consciences and imaginaries. A performative action of a symbolic nature will precede the projection, according to a ceremonial “ignition” of the language.
